Re the 407 door seal issue and airbag warnings, after a few days of rain and testing with the hose, I gave up as water was still pooling on top of the bottom door seal and then running inside the car.

My solution was to put a few holes thru the seal with a leather hole punch tool which seems to allow the water to exit (the door seal gets squashed...

Noise from the aircon pulley.

I've got a bit of a rattle from my air con compressor, only when the air-con is off, it disappears completely when I turn the air con on. I thought I'd better fix it before the pulley drops off!

I'm guessing that the idle bearings in the pulley are dead or dying and need replacing. I've got a Sanden manual that suggests the pulley is easy enough...

More information, I've found a couple of sites with useful information.

Firstly, this site lists parts, it has a bearing interchange list.

Secondly, this is a guide written by somebody who has replaced a clutch / pulley assembly because of a dodgy bearing. He bought the correct tools rather than machining his own!

hi people,

wondering what the sightglass is telling me about my aircon... when switched on it's green with bubbles and i guess froth becauseafter a while the liquid seems to be less transparent and whiter in colour, the aircon is cold but i have felt colder.

The green tells you that someone has been using tracer dye in the system.
Tracer dye is used supposedly as a last resort by servicemen when they can't detect a leak. It's added to the system and an ultra violet light is then run over the entire system and this makes the green dye fluorescent and therefore easier to detect the leak. Unfortunately,...

We did a retro fit on a series one BX16V a couple of years back and it is a fairly large project on one of those as they didn't even have the penetrations through the firewall for the extra fans so we even had to cut those and fit the captive nuts, it also had no electrical...

After getting my newly acquired Xantia TD 1998 up to over 100 degrees today in traffic I thought I had better have a look at the fans, whilst checking connections I located a dirty connector behind the N/S headlamp and a disconnected aircon compressor, cleaned and reconnectes and regassed the aircon is blowing nicely cold (its showing 35 degrees...

Xsara - total heater fan failure

Hello!

I was driving to work this morning in my Xsara (mk. 1, 1.8 SX), and after about 5 minutes, the heater fan stopped working completely - it's been working absolutely fine up til this point, but there's not a thing now, on any temperature setting or fan setting :(

I've checked the fuses, and they're all OK, anyone have any ideas as to what...

Xantia 1.9 TD air-con issue

It wont work . I hit the button push the slider to 18c close windows ,
outside temp 85 !!! and nothing happens it just blows out cold air , the
same as before i hit the switch . A sticker on top of the unit tells me it
was serviced last June . A comp relay was changed and it was charged full .
Has it broken down again , if so can i mend it or is...

Looks like a bodgie on the compressor clutch or cabin switch that causes the air conditioning to be on all the time. :?
The aircon switch should cause the light in its centre to come on when turned on, and the compressor clutch should click on loudly soon after.
Maybe try going back to the June man to see what he knows, and what warranty the law...

Did you have the intake lever on recycle? When its really hot as it was today, then this is the only real way of getting the temperature down. Otherwise the system is constantly having to cool very hot air.

I bought a car with the air con needing regassing.. (being carefull here not to mention it's a Honda accord 2.0iSE auto 1996) :lol:

So I paid £60 to have it regassed.. It worked great for 10 days.. But..

It stopped blowing cold air, on checking yesterday I could hear the fan come on at the front of the car, today though, nothing seems to happen...

R12 was completely banned from all new systems in the UK (and possibly in Europe too) in 1993.

Now that is REALLY usefull to know, never seen it written down before, i gathered that it was sometime in the 90's that R12 was banned but had thought it was much later!

Having prevaricated a while, I have finally bitten the bullet and reagssed the AC on the Xantia. This is a 97 TD, so probably never been done, and the AC had got to the stage where you could hardly tell it's on. OK, I bit the bullet and tried 1 of these kits, Castrol, tbh, I found it a little flimsy and hard to press the button. BUT it worked, aircon compressor kicked in and overloaded the canister for a second, had to leave it, turn air con off, then turn it back on then try again, but it WORKED.

A specialist will do a better job than you can do with a £30 can of refrigerant, but will cost more. I've seen these sorts of cans for around a tenner (delivered) on the net, so you can get them cheaper too.

hello. i think my compressor has gone tits up as the clutch started to rattle then funny smell then the aux belt snapped. does the aux belt from a non air-con car fit mine so i can bypass the compressor.

I believe you will have to undo the compressor completely to clear it from the belt run.
The electric cluctch would be a pressfit onto the compressor axle.
Cant see it as a big problem converting to a non-a/c.
Usually a cool beer and a thorough visual inspection of the affected area of the belt run will make things clear - try it 8)

Just recently picked up a xantia 1.9td tempation edition 1997 model. All the fans and blowers seem to work as they are ment to But im not sure if the air con works or not, The guy i baught it off claimed it did but showed me this by setting it to max cold and blower on highest. This belt connects to the air/con pump as well as a couple of other things and it sits directly below it and looks like a silver cylinder with what appear to be two rubber hoses connected to the end of it.

Once you find it, look at what appears to be the pulley that the belt passes around.

I suppose in many ways you've answered your own question; if the compressor won't handle it, then replace the compressor with one that will. I feel the 508 is really quite marginal on a CX when you consider a BX has a 7 piston variety.
There are gases that will go over R12 and this could be your solution, but as to what these are in your country...

If it has been converted to R134a, there's no point in demanding an overcoat gas as many of these require a different oil and dryer.
If the guy doing the work has run a dye in it, first thing he has to do is search for the leak not just keep dumping gas charges into it;...

605 pollen filter location

I had assumed from reading various forums, that the pollen filter woudl be in the passenger footwell, under the glove box, behind the various switches.

However, when I got in there to look (having bought a replacement filter) I can't find anythign that matches the shap of the filter!

So 2 questions.

Blower Fan and Air Con not working

Have just the other day replaced by Blaupunkt 3030 radio with a Radio CD single din fitment. Used the adaptor plate from Halfords and evrything worked fine. The intercooler is for turbo engines, and has nothing to do with air conditioning.
The pollen filter is above the passenger floor, next to the blower motor.
There is a cover with probably 3 brassy Philips screws to remove to access it.

hi, my air con's not working, its a 2001 406 2.0 hdi 90. the fans come on but the compressor clutch wont. i checked the pressure with a guage and its just on the green/blue mark. i went to halfrauds to get a refill can, then when i got in the car to come home to top up the air con was working, so i topped it up and it stayed working, turned car...

Try with a test lamp instead of a meter.
That will give you an idea of the current that can flow.

I've bought a can of jollop and pressure gauge etc, to top up the gas on my aircon. I'm having a senoir moment here though, which is the low pressure side?
Of the pipes connected to the compressor, is it the one which gets cold when the system is running, or the other one.....

Easy enough, the can of refrigerant will only connect to the smaller of the two connectors. Ensure that the tin is upright and that there is a bowl of hot water to dunk it in to empty the tin properly. Good luck.

Hi All, at some point in its past my P reg 405 estate (1.9td) has had its aircon system removed. I am looking at getting it put back on.

The pump appears to be still in place as do at leat some of the pipes and electronics, however I know that the compresser is missing, assuming I am IDing things right.
What is the best way of going about...

to have someone re-fit aircon to your car will probably cost more than you could buy another 405TD with working aircon.

First thing you need to do is work out what's missing. There should be:

Compressor
Pipework assembly that goes from the compressor in front of the sump
Condensor (hidden between the fans and the radiator)

XM '98 A/C sound

Hi, i have started to be a strange gargling sound when i turn on the automatic A/C in my mk2 XM.
With the A/C on there is aprox. some 20-30 secs of silence, then a power-up sound the some 20 secs of muffled gargling sound then a power-down type of sound.
This goes in cycles while the A/C is on.
On the other hand the output is fine.

Hi,

I've just bought a W reg. 306. Low miles for good money. The downside is its had a smack on the O/S front and been repaired and there's still a few jobs to be done. It drives and has mot etc. so the jobs can be rolling repairs.

It looks like there's some damage to the a/c pipework at the front o/s behind the headlamp. I can't quite work out...

The high speed fan would have come on as a safeguard when you left the car sitting idling in the car park; not a real good practice although it does happen often. A mate of mine who is a fridge/air con mechanic often tells me that he has to smile when he is working at the local shopping centres in Summer where outside temps hit the high 40s C and...

Air Con not working. When switched on the light on switch comes on but nothing else happens. I tried disconnecting the brown sensor at the fuel filter and one fan (left) comes on at full speed. I'm not sure if the fans comes on when engine heats up in traffic, the guage goes up to near 100 but I heven't heard fan cutting in....

I've just had my Air con regassed, well tried to anyway. Under the leak test it showed a hole in the Rad.

Therefore could someone please tell me how bigger job it is to replace and roughly how much this should cost?

I take it there are no ways of plugging the hole, like you would with a normal water rad?

I really don't know the layout on a 306, but with a BX the 8 valve has the condensor behind the upper crossmember and the 16V in front of, so it's easier to do a 16 over an 8.
Just use a bit of common sense with it and if all else fails, use one of my favourite tricks and drain the coolant into a bucket (and keep it well away from dogs and cats as...

405 steaming up!!

Hi all,

Car with all the rain is steaming up ie. rear passenger windows and estate load area. Will this be a problem because aircon not working.

Air con is dead as specialist says that hole caused by stone in condensor radiator.

2 questions would that be true? and anyone give an estimated cost of replacing as guy said front of car needs to come...

Yes you do the flap from up below the dash, Its a bit fiddly to do though :wink:

The motor is held on the left hand side of the heater assembly with 2 x cross head screws, Small hands make it easy or gently drill the 5 glovebox rivets out & replace them with countersunk headed bolts & U nuts on the dash.

My aircon unit is acting a bit strange. If you put the key in the ignition and turn it so that the warning lights come on (WITHOUT starting the engine), it always works without fail, so far so good.

Sometimes however, when the engine turns over it won't work after that, or even sometimes it will work but will then cut out randomly. I'm not overly...

I can't really see the contact points there, but I've given it a spray of WD-40 then a good clean with a firm brush to try and sort things out. It seems that a 'cold start' will have the most problems now, sometimes not working the first time, but otherwise it seems ok.

The ABS light comes on occasionally, but I hear this was a common and ongoing...

306 condensor replacement

From reading previous threads it appears some have replaced condensors. Could someone who has done this or knows how, advise whether any special tools are needed. I see on the 306 forum a spring locking tool is required. Is this the only special tool needed, did you even need it. Any advice on the above plus pitalls, tips appreciated.

there are 2 connections on 306 condensor one on left hand side at bottom has a clamp with a m6 nut holding it,the other end is either a screw together union (usually tu petrol engine) or a snap together connection,if you follow this pipe it goes to reciever/dryer i would disconnect it here and take condensor out like this and then pop to your...

Hi

I'm wondering if anyone could help me, My air con needs a re-gas and leak testing.

The problem is there doesn't seem to be many places that do it around me other than the main dealer.

Is it worth sticking to the main dealer or does someone know somewhere that is good and reliable?

My 406 '98 will mist up every trip unless I keep the aircon on.
Have tried all variations of hot/cold on the controls but cant solve the problem.
Dont want to keep the aircon all the time and am sure there is no water getting into the car.
Anyone know what it could be?

Me n mate are gonna try refilling my aircon via the dodgy looking refill aerosols as my system has a leak - but is too shot to be fixed for a reasonable price so trying this as it has a sealent in it.
Question is, which valve is it that I need to use to fill the refrigerant into the system because I have 3 identical looking bleed valves...

Hmm, might not be the same on the 406, but on my 405, there are two valves - one bigger than the other, right up on the bulkhead with big plastic caps on..

The filler pipe will only fit on one ( the smaller one ).

You wouldn't have sprung a leak in your heater matrix by any chance and might be smelling stale coolant that has found it's way under the carpets?

my aircon has a smell a bit like rotten eggs but only when im not moving when moving all is fine ive checked the drain underneath and that is running fine .
you can smell it around the pollen filter but it is not the filter and you can only smell it with the engine running

As above, the Mrs drove my 406 with air con switched on. After arriving home, and getting back in to go out again, the air con does not switch on, nor does the internal fan.

The chances of this still having enough gas in it to not trip the LP switch aren't good. Its usually recommended to run the AC once every 2 weeks to keep the seals wet with oil.

My last CX with air con was a 1984 25 Pallas ie, if i remember correctly the air on that was cold and refreshing (it had been properly serviced/recharged just beofre i got it) Question is will the prestiges be wanting attention??

Dude pay an independant air con service engineer to check it for you they will recharge it with dye in the gas that will pinpoint the leak.
Should only cost about £40 IIRC.
On my 306 GTI-6 the pipes under the radiator are prone to corrosion etc and these are quite often the reason for the leaks.
There are 2 pipes and cost about £70 each from Pug...

The pollen filter is very cunningly hidden I'm afraid. Its mounted behind the carpet trim on the RH side of the passenger footwell. I found I had to partially remove the trim from front of said footwell before tackling the rest of the job. with the trim partially removed its possible to wangle out the old filter. Fitting the new one wasn't easy...

Their condensor prices are extremely competitive but don't show the BX there. As it's not uncommon to adapt one breed to another or to tailor make them, they might still be worth a call for anyone wanting a BX one.
From memory, one of the Subraru condensors is very close to a BX one and they're shown at around 90 quid whereas the genuine BX was...
