TPMS Has it or not?

Unread post by ChrisRobin »

308CC, 2012, Alure.
Changed stock wheel to alloys noticed it had TPMS valves and senders so all were swapped.
Last night I had to go out to her on the side of the road front passenger side making an odd noise and steering feel weird.
Turns out passenger front tyre was flat, thankfully only at the bottom! :-D
I enquired why she drove on it flat and not stopped when the tyre sign popped up on dash, she said it hasn't come on, and to be fair she was right no warning sign.
So question is:
Has it got TPMS?
Can it be turned off at the dash?
if it has't got TPMS why has it got TPMS valves.
If Not more annoying on wheel change, I bought NEW TPMS valves for it when it did not need them.
Anyone any ideas on this, it a bit odd as to why Peugeot would go the expense of the TPMS valves when the car hasn't got the rest of the system from factory.
VIN: VF3**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff]
if needed by anyone.
Thanks.

Pretty sure that the new valves have to be 'excited' and then added to the system with a Lexia/Diagbox. There are various threads on this.

Twelve year old TPMS valves will be reaching the end of the built-in batteries' lives.

On my X7 I can press a button marked CHECK which shows whether the system thinks the TPMS valves are OK or not. Do you have a similar button?

Question. When the valves were swapped over was care taken to make sure that they ended up in exactly the same wheel position on the car as when they were on the original wheels?

@myglaren: Is that the Valves or the TPMS control units inside the rim, as they stayed original it was just the valve that was changed, I know with VW etc on setups which have separate valve you can replace the valve part without any issues of laptop work, it is only the actual sensor you need to reprogram to the system, but I do remember when we first got the car, the rear driver tyre was really low if I remember rightly around 1 bar was in it something like that, so we blew it up and I thought puncture repair yet no nail/screw in it and it stayed up afterward but there was no dash warning then either but at the time I never bothered as I didn't think it had TPMS on it.
One of our techs is a Ex Peugeot Tech and he said he thinks Peugeot get their wheels from another part of the factory and a lot of them were fitted as standard with TPMS valves as they didn't know what vehicle they would be fitted to before hand, how true I don't know.
I don't seem to have an buttons anywhere either to re-set or check, I need to get a look a the manual, it's not my car so I don't drive very often so really sure were to directly look so I am scanning the dash button and pressing stalks to see it if comes up, I usually have it for MOT's and when it is broken/playing up generally other than that it's the wife's baby but I am aloud to wash and polish it oddly!

"Question. When the valves were swapped over was care taken to make sure that they ended up in exactly the same wheel position on the car as when they were on the original wheels?"
I rather doubt it, but would that not throw up a warning for you to re-set them. I know VW group ones if you change just the valve you are ok, no reprograming required only if you change the sensor/control unit in the wheel for a new one and again on VW group if the battery fails a warning comes up on the dash as there is no comms with that sensor, yet I have no warnings, it's really odd you would almost swear the vehicle does not have TMPS onboard, yet the OE rims have sensors. The new rims that went on it are size wise like for like. I can not see anything in the cockpit that hints TPMS re-set, or check, although like I said to myglaren it's not my regular car I very rare drive it so I am not ofey with it's controls, I only get to drive it MOTs and when it is playing up Oh and service time, it is my wife's baby.

It is the TPMS module that needs to be excited and added to the system.
I have no direct knowledge unfortunately, only what I have read on this forum.

Can you check the build specification against the VIN to confirm, or not, whether TPMS is fitted?

I also have no direct experience of resetting the TPMS although I did use my Lexia years ago to remove the TPMS option in my then Mk1 C5 to get rid of the annoying error message. Maybe a previous owner of your car has done the same? Since then I have bought a TPMS exciter but it's never been used and I'm not even sure it's the right one!

This is what I don't quite get, with the VW group (I work for) the car will be the master, it is the car that pings the sensors, it a sensor fails to respond inside the rim it throws up a warning on the dash, be it damaged, flat battery etc, if you fit a new in rim sensor/control unit you then have to re programme the system to accept the new rim sensor, if the valve heads are datable, which most are, then you can change these with out any issues as they carry no onboard chips/date or info it is just a rubber/metal valve body with the spring and seal inside. We don't really care about which stud the wheel came off as the system just resets itself at every start up, our systems self calibrate at key turn.
Is Peugeot the same, I don't know but I can't see it being that much different, but aren't those "famous last words" as they say. I don't know I just found it odd, TPMS valves yet no warning of a flat tyre, perhaps it only works in France.

As I understand it there are slightly different systems on the Mk1, Mk2 and Mk3 (X7) C5s. IIRC the Mk1 isn't sophisticated enough to know which corner a wheel is on but the Mk2 does know this. The X7 is the same and gets upset if you swap front to rear for example. All of them need coding in with an exciter and Diagbox, you can't just drive the car or push a certain button sequence in the car. Those are all active systems and there may be some cross-over in years.

Our 308 uses a passive system which uses ordinary valves and relies upon the ABS system monitoring the rotational speed of each wheel and tyre. If one goes up in speed that indicates low pressure and a warning is displayed on the dash. The remedy is to regularise all the tyre pressures and then reinitialise the system using the setup menu on the centre touch panel. I suspect that later X7s with a touchscreen system will also have passive TPMS.

Repair kits are available for just the valve part of the TPMS assembly. Is this the same as what you are talking about on VWs?

Our 2011 308 CC has TPMS sensors in the wheels, but does not have a TPMS ECU... I think that maybe they fitted sensors to every car to save keeping track of which wheels went with which car at the factory.

@ Paul-R - "Our 308 uses a passive system which uses ordinary valves and relies upon the ABS system monitoring the rotational speed of each wheel and tyre" mine has the sensors in each rim
@ Xantia -V6 - Sounds like you have the same system as me on our 2012 CC.

@ RichardW - "INFLATION PRESSURE LOSS INDICATOR WITHOUT TYRE DEFLATION INDICATOR" that is so French.... what on earth does that mean :-), inflation pressure loss, does that not mean the tyre is deflating. OR in the wife's case it is noisy and the steering is wonky, whats wrong with it ???? wouldn't mind but I was still at home at the time  .

End of the day folks I am not fussed about getting them to work again as on cars this "old" they can be a bit of an annoyance, I just found it strange when we came to wheel change time so we ditched the OE wheel and put new like for like size wheels on the tyre guy said Oh.... you have TPMS valves you need to get new stems, which threw me a little as I remember the vehicle when we 1st had it haveing a very low tyre, yet no warning, odd nothing comes up on dash at start up, but then for er in doors to drive with a flat and no light I thought really odd, basically I could of fitted the chrome valves that I bought for the new wheels, then the tech in our place said that some Peugeots he had worked on and changed tyres had the monitors in the wheels yet no system in the car, he had the same thought as Xantia, they fit the monitors to all the OE wheels, ship them to the factory who just fit them regardless of TPMS ECU's
I have looked all through the cars setting at lunchtime (board with a butty) and in all of the settings I find nothing to "re-set" them if one is low or something sets off the warning so surely if you get a low tyre the ligh comes on you don't have to go to a dealer to switch the warning off, surely not
But it has got voice control I found that out AND I can unlock one or all doors off the plip! wow!!!! Never knew that but there again it's the wife's car so not going to change any of it.

It means that on indirect systems (those without TPMS sensors fitted to the wheels), that it will only warn you of low pressure or a puncture, but will not indicate which tyre - you'll have to manually eyeball and check all the pressures in each tyre to determine which one is low if not obvious.

I should also mention that some newer models with indirect TPMS without sensors in the wheels, can tell you which tyre has the issue. It's just software / programming as the wheel speed sensors (used by the ESP system) provide the rotational measurements to the ESP ECU which issues the warnings.

It didn't come out quite as it looks on the screen in service box - on the left is a list of functions and on the right is what the particular car has. So left is 'INFLATION PRESSURE LOSS INDICATOR' and right, fitted (or not) to this car is 'WITHOUT TYRE DEFLATION INDICATOR'

Your guess is as good as mine as to why they use different terminology?!?

Ok, so having just checked the VIN myself, your 308 CC doesn't have TPMS fitted at all! - or more accurately, it didn't have it fitted at factory. I just mis-read Richards post, but it essentially is the same - not fitted.

So I can only assume that at some point the wheels may have been replaced from a donor vehicle that was fitted with sensors (people often do change a set of wheels if they're badly scratched up alloys), but this won't work with your vehicle as it additionally requires the TPMS ECU, aerial and of course BSI configuration. So I hope that clarifies things.
