Wrong fuel! Best way to drain the petrol?
My Wife has just added 23 litres of premium unleaded to our c4 GP, 1.6 hdi.
What is the best way to drain the fuel tank? (On our driveway)
The AA are going to deliver the car back to our house.
Is there any good resource for that?
Thanks for the help...
regards

Thanks I'll take a look. The AA was going charge me £240 inc 10 litres of diesel, so was exploring the idea of doing it myself...

I did the same thing a couple of years ago.
I contacted my Breakdown insurer & they arranged for a specialist company to drain tank. Took them 2 hours to attend, but it was all free except for the 10 ltr of diesel they put in.
Change your B/D insurer!

Re: Wrong fuel! Best way to drain the petrol?
I've done it twice, 1st time, 1.6 hdi Xantia, about a gallon before realising my mistake, just topped up with diesel was fine, just kept above half a tank for a while. 2nd time, 2.0 hdi, C5, was from ¼ to full drove about a mile before it started messing about, this time drained it from the fuel filter, kept having to turn the ignition on and off so the car pumped itself out, down to about a ¼ tank, then put 2 gallon of diesel in to get to the fuel station, then filled it to the brim and again didn't let it go below ½ a tank for a while. Used the removed petrol in another car.
So all is not lost, or was I just lucky...... I good luck

Be prepared to have to replace the Fuel tank pump / gauge too. Struggled for 2 weeks spluttering and stalling even after having it properly drained and cleaned up after Tesco changed their fuel pumps years ago on my Xantia HDi.
The in tank pump / gauge became damaged despite cleaning out, and the car was undriveable, but a new pump sorted that out.

Happened with my eldest's first C3, bought from a Honda dealer. As they did the paperwork one of the Honda staff filled it up for them. With petrol. They got half of the four miles home and it conked out.
At the time Honda had no diesel engines so he assumed it was a petrol engine.
Expensive mistake for them, they did change several components but it was all down to them so no idea what or the costs involved.

All down to luck IF she had driven it....and how much diesel was in it before fill up.
If you have access to the fuel pump (under the cap under the rear seat.....then remove this and drop a cheep In-Tank pump in a get the fuel out into containers.
Refill with fresh fuel and add about a cup full of Two-Stroke (chain saw) oil to get lubrication into the pump/injectors quickly.....
You may not have damaged those items if you are lucky (I was)

Re: Wrong fuel! Best way to drain the petrol?
Many thanks for all the comments and ideas.
I think this car, 2011 c4 GP, doesnt have access to the fuel tank under the rear seats... So can't go that way. I also think there is no in tank pump, we haven't started it, so think anything forward of fuel tank should still be diesel. Might try a small gauge siphon tube down the refill pipe. Otherwise maybe a pump connected to the pipe that feeds the fuel filter. I have a lawn mower to use the petrol in after...

Re: Wrong fuel! Best way to drain the petrol?
23 litres of premium unleaded was added to the tank, low fuel warning message was appearing, so ~43 miles left on trip computer, so estimate 5 - 10 litres diesel in there to start with.
Anyone know if its possible to siphon through the filler pipe on these cars? Any anti Siphon valves? How to work around them?
(from speaking to folks at work, sounds like pro services do it this way albeit with an electric pump rather than siphon action)
I don't mind buying and electric pump or drill powered one.

Re: Wrong fuel! Best way to drain the petrol?
Some do have a pump and some just have a gauge, so really better to provide your VIN so we know what model, year engine, and whether you do or don't have an in tank pump to save providing irrelevant advice.richarda wrote: 28 Nov 2023, 14:04 Many thanks for all the comments and ideas.
