One for the 'brickies'. 12" x 4½" x 3". Dug up from the lane when some groundwork was being done.



I'm told the age of a house can be gauged by the size of the brick used, but I don't know what the parameters are.
The left hand side of this house was built some time in the 1800's (on the original building from the 1700's, not much of that left), and the porch and right hand side in 1910.

Not much additionals from the "named brick" site here in the "G's" other than the locations of the company, but a few pics of similarly stamped bricks including one found in Argentina.

I was aware of a local brick factory, I worked half a mile from it but have never seen it. I knew someone who worked there years ago.

Had a look - Ibstock and they just look like any other brick.

I did find that there are three other brick factories close by too.

Here are some loosely train/bike/canal related pics.

This is Neptune's Staircase caught while sitting on the Jacobite steam train. There were two Navy cutters at the top to act as rescue boats for the aircraft low flying up and down the glen. There were two similar boats in Oban harbour the week before for just the same reason.

The same shot in reverse showing a ScotRail train crossing the rail bridge and a timber lorry crossing the road bridge with a cyclist in shot right on cue.
You cannot escape timber lorries in Lochaber - even on single track side roads!

I must have passed that hundreds of times and had no idea it existed.
We used to frequent the Lambton Lion Park, years ago, which was very close, and also a scrapyard that was even closer.
Drive around with my eyes closed it seems.

Between Great Lumley and Fencehouses, near Houghton le Spring, and just south of Lumley Sixth Pit, was the brickworks. The whole area was ripe for mining with at least nine separate operations. Lumley Colliery itself was home to twelve separate pits sunk from 1770 and closed by 1966.

The brickworks was demolished in 1992 and is now partly trees and partly a car park for J&B Coachworks. But even Durham County Council still refers to it as 'Former Lumley Brickworks'.

You'd have smelt it had it been up and running. The London Brick Companies Great Brickhill plant could be smelt for miles around downwind. Real stinker!

I did used to get up that way occasionally a few years back, dropped off a colleague who lived there.

In earlier times I never noticed and signs of smoke but it was mainly weekends when we were at the Lion park.
Never saw any evidence of smoke from the two near where I worked - one is even on Station Lane, as was the company I worked for. It is a bit further along though.

With this post it is 4994 posts and 4993 replies on the POTD thread, with the replies inevitably and always being one behind the number of posts.

I found out about these today. They are edible but it would be hard to find someone who has tried them.
The plant is likes a bit of poor, compacted soil around foot paths, field entrances, waste ground and road sides. Very common on disturbed ground...you will have seen it.

Next time you come across it take one of the flower heads and squeeze it in your fingers then smell it. It has a distinctive and not unpleasant smell but what is it?
