These were mentioned more recently and I set out to photograph them as they came on, only to find that they were all inoperative.

Until this morning - saw at 7am that one up the street was on - and still is.

There are about a dozen more but all the rest are off.

Astronomers preferred the sodium street lights as opposed to the 'whiter' street lights, as they only output light on a couple of frequencies, and it was simple to filter it out. The 'whiter' lights output on a lot more frequencies, and so are harder to filter.

That was one of the points mentioned James. Can't seem to find the relevant bits though.
They are supposed to be replacing the sodium lights with LEDs - they put LEDs up a few years ago but they are inadequate, many areas left unlit.

A picture from todays trip. Not sure how it happened but it did and has. Electricite de France run all of the UK's Nuclear Power plants, and are building its new ones. Free tours though.

Wonder who owns Électricité de France?

The whole electrical generation/transmission and distribution grid in the UK has evolved, or been engineered into a multi-company patchwork of international shareholdings. The chance delve into the delails revealed on the Pylon I photographed and posted on POTD, revealed that it was part of the major transmission line on the national grid north up to Scotland. The distribution newtork from the National Grid is the responsibility of a number of regional companies well illustrated on this map.

Well I knew that Northumbrian Water is owned by a chinese Company, but I didnt know Northern Powergrid was owned by Berkshire Hathaway Energy, yes not the English County, but as American as apple pie.

A few anomalies in that map, interesting to note that Western Power Distribution has a stretch of the East Coast and "UK" Power Networks just has East Anglia and the South East!!

Not connected to electricity distribution as such, but there's a fairly good article on the BBC website today about nuclear power and the misconceptions about radiation. It'll do little to change the attitudes of fervent nuclear dislikers, but it is worth reading nonetheless.

but......rather than put the first one out of the way in the usual suspects, west cumbria/wales maybe Northumberland, where no-one can see it and appreciate its beauty and safety, what a publicity coup it would be worldwide if it was given pride of place, with one of the great names of British Engineering tastefully tattooed on its silvered sides......

Right in the middle of Hyde Park.....

That's when the technology will have really arrived.

Poject Iceworm https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Iceworm started in 1960 and ended a few years later hoped to make use of a small 'semi-portable' nuclear reactor to power the miltary base it was situated in. Unfortunately, the shifting ice it was buried in shifted a bit too quickly and the base had to be abandonned and the reactor removed. The whole Project Iceworm program was a bit of thorny subject as its true purpose was concealed from just about everybody at the time

Mrs Bobins pointed me to a - dry as dust - academic paper "Predicting the cost of the consequences of a large nuclear accident in the UK". I've not posted this to provoke an argument, rather to point out that their hypothetical nuclear accident occurs in my back garden. No, really, it does The map used in their paper locates onto the north west of Midhurst. All these years and I never noticed that nuclear power plant blotting out the sunset here

Now this is getting a bit weird. Regular viewers will have seen my asparagus picture yesterday in POTD In that picture was a pylon. The location of the 'nuclear accident' in the above academic paper was about 100 metres east of that pylon.
Small world, eh ?

Which begs the question: what came first? the pylon or the reactor?

Good question I'll nip up there during the week and see if I can find out. Maybe they've got a really really small visitor's centre there that I can visit and ask.
