Nuclear waste will in time become a valuable resource, if we bury it we will have miners digging it up again in a few years time for use in some new found industry/product.

Likewise plastic waste which is already happening to an extent.

They've already changed most - if not all - the streetlights in West Sussex to low energy ones.
"Working with West Sussex County Council we have completed one of the biggest street lighting projects in Europe. During this project we have replaced approximately 55,000 Lighting Columns and 12,000 Illuminated signs, bollards, beacons etc. whilst continuing to maintain a total of 85,000 Units. "

There were three in my street, one attached to my house, on 24/7/365 for at least ten years. Fixed last autumn.

All our street lamps have ben change to low energy and low light pollution.

West Sussex lighting... Small world, as my step-son is one of the contractors who has been working on just this. Recent high winds have made cherry-picker operations a tad difficult, but the projects march on.

Here in Andalucia, there's also a massive conversion programme to LED, and the results are really impressive: crystal-clear white light, better ground coverage and less light-pollution, and goodbye to the old mercury and sodium lamps. Hopefully the street LEDs will have a longer service life than those which found their way into traffic lights a few years ago, where the multi-led circular displays broke up within a year so.

We've had a few early failures of the lamps, but not more than you'd expect. Once they've gone 'round again to replace the faulty ones then they're genrally very reliable. They're being a bit mean with turning them off though - they'll go on in the very early morning, but go off again whilst it's still dark at the moment !

...and on the back of that....Scottish Power have ditched generating electricity by burning gas, or burning coal.

Relatively old news, but the Chief Exec of Scottish Power was on breakfast TV this morning, getting that message across and announcing investment and jobs alongside their commitment to green energy, and leccy vehicles got a mention on the side!

Smart Meters....good/bad or a conspiracy to harvest and sell another little chunk of your mundane but valuable domestic data?

I do believe they aren't compulsory, but some sellers may lead you to believe that is the case!

I keep rejecting the offer - it must be something to favour the energy companies or they wouldn't bother with them.
It is possible that at times of high demand they will increase the tariff or restrict the supply.

I think you're just old fuddy duddies resistant to change and prone to believe conspiracy theories

I went straight in for the smart meters both gas and electricity, the electric one has been in for four years now, works great, takes a reading every thirty minutes, likewise the recently fitted gas meter.

I'd guess that the advantage for the suppliers is that they don't have the cost of on the road meter readers but even they resisted because they had to carry the cost of installation up front.
