My wife`s 1999 406 GTX has been on "lockdown SORN" for four months. Taxed it and got it ready today but the bonnet is stuck. The nearside catch releases the bonnet that side but the offside is firmly down.
Anyone know of a trick to release the O/side catch.

Re: 406 bonnet pull
Not sure whether the 406 has a single bonnet catch, or two.
If a pair, then a rod could link L & R catches, and this can become disconnected, only allowing one catch to actually release when the release is pulled.
If lucky, the rod and release mechanism might be accessible through the radiator grille.
Parts diag could confirm, but I can't access Pug parts.

Re: 406 bonnet pull
This 406 has one catch - but these units are different depending on left or right and drive Chris.
Unfortunately there is no magic trick - if it was easy there wouldn't be any point in having a locking system.
I suspect some examination from either underneath the engine bay a long screw driver and some long thin nosed pliers may be the weapons of choice.
When my X7 plastic bonnet release tab (the one you use to actually open the bonnet after initially releasing the bonnet from inside the car) snapped one winter due to the extreme cold and the nature of the plastic, I had a similar issue and it was the day of the MOT!
I Managed to get a replacement bonnet release catch and cable from the dealer. As long as you can operate the initial bonnet release mechanism inside the car to give you some play in the bonnet and with the help of a long screwdriver you may be able to apply pressure to the cable to release the second part - or use some long pliers to grab an exposed part of the cable and pull it in the release direction. I had to do this a few times, but once I got the hang of it I was able to replace the cable and catch at home later on.
Not the same setup as the Xsara Picasso or the 406 but...

Re: 406 bonnet pull
Good to hear someone has had success with a C5
If anyone with a Xsara Picasso Would be kind enough to have a look and see if they can work out how to get at the pesky thing
I would be most grateful
I have persuaded someone with a working system to let me have a look at theirs and for the life of me I can not see how on earth it can be got at.
Thanks

Re: 406 bonnet pull
Sorry, the 406 got the attention!
If you'd like some detail from the parts page (which might help), could you post your VIN, so we can have look to see whether the Parts diagrams would help?
Thanks.

XSARA PICASSO FAMILY SALOON 2.0 HDi 90 Manual gearbox 5
This is what is shown as under there...
Click to enlarge As Marc said, a single catch.
Try leaning down heavily on the bonnet front while operating the release lever. It can lessen the upward loading on the catch.

Re: 406 bonnet pull
It also looks its for a LHD 406, mine is RHD. All 406`s have two catches.
Anyway its sorted. The cable had unhooked itself from the O/side catch. The cable set up on RHD models with the bonnet pull lever on the o/side of the car, is odd. The lever cable goes to the N/side catch, then another cable goes from that catch to the o/side catch.
I took it to my mates garage, up on a two post lift. Remove undertray, long lever bar to the O/side catch, a few careful attempts to get in the right place, and bingo, the catch released.

Re: 406 bonnet pull
Quite common for a bonnet release lever to be the non-driver side for RHD vehicles - the same on our RHD XM.
LHD accounts for the majority of production, and it it's not worth re-engineering the item for all the use it will get.
Twin catches usually have a linking rod, to ensure simultaneous release of both sides, but this can become unhooked from the cable (or the cable can snap). Glad it's all sorted!
This has turned out to be a real case of a tangled thread - 2-ply.
Starting to unravel, thank goodness!
