In your previous post, that bread maker is a fascinating piece of equipment... Must find out how it worked... Wonder if it worked on the 'Chorleywood' principle - the one responsible for the dire excuse we get for bread in Supermarkets - the stuff in plastic bags
The area it was situated in was 'the bakery', there were huge mixing bowls just out of site. I presume the mix was lobbed into the bread maker at one end, where it was then kneaded, shaped, proved (in the area at the top) then spat out at the other end, put onto the trolleys (in the background), then into the ovens 'round the corner.

As for Chorleywood loaves - they do have one good use, they make for a great bacon butty :-D

I thought that bead maker was missing something too... Proper bread mixing bowls are massive affairs and need a bit of grunt from their motors to mix the dough...

Somewhat more than my Kenwood Chef!!! Even so, that obne generates a lot of torque for bread mixing at low speed and does an excellent job. Lesser mixers fail badly when asked to mix bread...

My Kenwood Chef, all of 40 years old and recently fully refurbished by me, helps make the most excellent bread (and cakes!) :D

It's one piece of kitchen kit I'll keep going as long as I possibly can... Along with my old faithful gas cooker... A mere youngster at just 12!!!

This what you mean, Jim ? :) Might need a bit of work with the Brasso and Mr sheen before you put them to work - not to mention a bit of an electrical test first :rofl2:

A wonderful invention still in use today at, amongst other places, many supermarkets.

A pneumatic delivery system. Specsavers have this at some of their branches, linked to the optics laboratory. In Reading there used to be a major clothing store called "Jacksons" (they did, amongst other things, all the school uniforms in the area) who had a similar system linked to the cash office, where the cash was managed. There were no tills anywhere on the shop floors.

Our local Asda has it but I remember as a little kid in Lewis' in Leeds (we lived in Doncaster then) watching them in use and thinking how incredible it was.

Mashed potato in them tubes would be 'interesting'

They use "balls and chutes" at the Co-operative in Beamish. Nice bit of drama.

The Cash Railway website has a fair bit of detail on the systems in stores across the country

The link goes to County Durham

Heelas (John Lewis) in Reading used to run a vacuum system, too, back in the Sixties. Grace Brothers itself!
Think I recall Sainsbury's in Godalming having a modern one too, much more recently.

I worked on/with a Lamson Tube system for several years... It is a wonderful system for moving bits of paper around a large enterprise...

Generally it was very reliable...

I believe Tesco still make very extensive use of them on their tills to return money to the cash office...

Lewis's in Birmingham had that vacuum set up back in the 1940s, Foster Bros. had a different system, a series of overhead cables, the girl put the money etc. in a cup, reached and clipped it in its socket pulled on a hanging cable and it catapulted the thing along the shop to the cashier.

That website, "The Cash Railway Website", is a total fountain of knowledge on the subject.

Just select your county (yes or even Country) from the list (http://www.cashrailway.co.uk/locations/index.htm) and it comes up with some gems of memory jogging information.

There's also a nice page on the Beamish System, which may well have been the one donated from The Dene Motor Cycle Company Haymarket Newcastle.

I mean...who knew?
