Re the 407 door seal issue and airbag warnings, after a few days of rain and testing with the hose, I gave up as water was still pooling on top of the bottom door seal and then running inside the car.

My solution was to put a few holes thru the seal with a leather hole punch tool which seems to allow the water to exit (the door seal gets squashed...

I've been running XUD's in Citroens for 15 years and I change cambelts every 40K miles. Some DIY mechanics leave them longer, but when a belt breaks on these engines, the damage is extensive. I've heard of guys getting a belt changed for around £120. It's worth getting the pulleys and water pump checked at the same time.

As above, the Mrs drove my 406 with air con switched on. After arriving home, and getting back in to go out again, the air con does not switch on, nor does the internal fan.

Hi all,
Got two problems on my 95 405 1.6 GLX (aircon)
When i turn off the ignition and the radiator fan is running, the fan stops immediately, surely this should continue for a while until the engine cools down, any ideas?

Does anyone know of a quick and easy way to check if a 406 has multiplexed wiring? I'm in the market for a diesel 406 and wish to avoid the multiplexed cars, whilst getting the most recent vehicle I can find.
One possibility which springs to mind is to check for a delay on headlight flash, but someone may have a better idea. Any suggestions...

Not at all difficult. If you have an under-tray fitted, that's the worst part. My Xantia has a little trapdoor under the sump plug, but the Xsara has an under-tray that has to be removed completely. Our 306 doesn't have a tray, so it's straight forward - a 10 minute job. You probably need a square bar to remove the plug. I always replace that type...

GSF of course.... Just a word of advice, don't go asking about other spares companies on GSF's website, it isn't good manners
What you really need to do is trundle on down to your local GSF and ask to see the gaiters so you can have a touchy feely of them to see which one is the softest/most flexible.

I would suggest checking the handbook first H rated tyres have a higher speed rating the T rated ones. If you put T rated ones on, when you are supposed to have H rated ones you may void your insurance and give them an excuse not pay out if the worst happens.

For what a pollen filter costs & how easy it is to replace I wouldnt even bother trying to clean it.
If the pollen filter gets too blocked up you greatly reduce the aitflow into the car.

FWIW, I also had the same sort of problem on the rear tyres of my 1999 406 1.8lx (112,000 miles), and sought out a tracking specialist who found them both out of alignment. A cheap fix at only £48, but it'll take a few '000 miles to prove if the alignment was causing the wear...

Possibly immobiliser, depending on year. If you have the later transponder type (no keypad, chip in key fob), check the connections to the reader coil in the plastic housing around the ignition lock barrel. What year is the vehicle?

The belt arrangement on these engines is a bit of a nightmare. You can't just remove the aircon compressor, as nothing will fit again. you *could* remove the aircon compressor, and fit a PAS pump and belt/tensioner setup from a non-A/C car, but that would be a fair bit of work. I would have thought it would be easier to fix what you have, and...

The filler / level plug is most likely on the end plate of the gearbox behind the passenger side wheel arch shield, Normally the bolt is halfway up on the casing & a different size to the other bolts.

No, but they can be temporarily disabled via the button on the steering column near the ignition switch, or disconnected totally behind the A pillar trim to stop the alarm going off when it feels like it.

When servicing the car I noticed some droplets of oil on the underbonnet sound insulation, parallel to the cam cover. It looks like oil has been sprayed upwards somehow, but can't see how it got through the engine cover, unless it had been driven without the cover on. Anyone like to guess where this may have come from ?

Oil in the air filter housing is pretty normal in my experience, always in one corner. This is due to the poor design of the breather/oil separator which is not a particularly effective separator! A modicum of oil will get in the boost pressure sensor pipe and conceivably if the diaphragm housing in the pump were full of oil then it may well stop...

Have you checked and double checked all of the valve clearances? Mine had a very tight inlet valve and it caused horrible cold starting....

I have a feeling I know exactly what is causing the crap starting and slightly poor economy on my 405 1.9TD, but I just want to be sure before spending even more cash on it.
It struggles to start, both hot and cold, and when it does finally start (usually after about 8-10 pistons over TDC) it runs a bit rough for a few seconds, and emits grey...

These are easy to fit - just need the new back box, another clamp, maybe another mounting rubber - check urs(should be ok), and some exaust paste sealant...
Just a case of undoing the rear clamp that holds the back box and mid pipe in place - might be stuck together with all that heat and dirt if been on there for ages - nothing a hammer & chisel...

Not sure if the 106 has the rear axle setup that the 306 had... if it does, do a google for ssp engineering. It could be the radius arm (i think its called?) bearings collapsing. It happened to my 306 and the back wheel rubbed when cornering. Hopefuly someone else here can clairfy your rear-axle type.

I'd suggest the basics, such as checking the timing, that all wiring connections and plugs are making a good contact. Are the spark plugs the right ones for the car as they seem they have introduced another problem. As for the distributer does the shaft that the rotor arm fits onto have an excessive amount of movement in it, thus mangeling the cap...

if the aircon gas is too low the system shuts down to save the compressor so chances are it needs regassing.

Without being at my lockup garage and looking in the Haynes manual I cant say for sure. Ive got the bx box in my Visa 16v. Ive used this site before when comparing ratios but then I have no speedo so cant be sure if they are right other than vaguely from people I have been following and straight line tests using an accelerometer according to this...

first problem. This is blatently a door locking solenoid. Pain to get to. Change it and all will be well.
As for the wheel moving in the arch, well, they do a bit, as they are trailing arms. The only wear that occurs in them is visible from behind the car. If the wheels are leaning in at the top (and out at the bottom!) then the axle beam has had...

Only just noticed on my 405 that the rear drivers side door doesnt lock under its own steam doesnt even unlock i have to do it separatly all the other doors lock and unlock fine !?!? any ideas ?
And the other thing is ive notice that when i brake the back end drops when i got out and had a look i pushed down on the back of the car and the wheels...

Looking for brushes / regulator spares for a Valeo Alternator.
Scoured the net, but seems more likely to find rocking horse poo.
I presume the alternator refurbishers/remanufacturers just file down oversized brushes to fit.
Any ideas ?

Sticking starter motor??????????

No you mean you are rocking the car whilst the key is in the start position ?? The starter is not engaged until the pre-engage is powered up and you can here them click in and you cam measure to 12 feed to the solenoid, not the big feed that should be 12v all the time. You need to check this as it could be an ignition switch problem.

OCCASIONALLY my 405 diesel key just turns - nowt there.
Short time rocking in gear, it will start, so I assume the starter motor is 'sticking'.
Question is WHAT is sticking, why, and can it be reasonably easily cured??

hahaha.... on a 405! it hasn't got any, that's the problem.
There's a hose that comes off behind the fuel filter. follow it and there *might* be an inline bleed point on that hose somewhere. If not, loosen it from the thermostat housing and bleed it the hard way.
Same goes for both the flow and return to the heater matrix. Crack off the hose...

As mentioned in another post, when I had the cambelt replaced on my car I had to top up the coolant after.
In Haynes it says you must bleed the system correctly. I've looked everywhere but the only bleed I can see is on top of the rad.
Where are the others?

Sounds like the speed pickup sensor to me. Not sure where this will be on your car but the EFI ECU will use it too hence the hesitation. You'll probably have some error codes in the ECU from it too which will need clearing.

I have a 406 coupe 2 litre with an erratic or non workin speedo depending on how its feeling each day!!
I know its not the speedo interface cos thats just for the 3 litre. The problem also has the effect of causin a slight heswitation in the engine when the needle is flicking about. I assume its a sensor somewhere but dont know where or...

Could also be the idle control valve or the lambda sensor - I had to change both on my 306.

If the Map Sensor is dodgy, I know it effects the idleing of the car, but will it effect the starting of the car, as i have the symptons of a dodgy map sensor, but also in the heat and when the engine is hot its a nightmare to start!

Depends what you read. I've read that diesel cars built after 1995 have to have seals that can cope with biodiesel, due to it being sold widely in Germany and France.
Another website said the seals on pre-1995 cars would be so rock hard by now that biodiesel wouldn't hurt them either.

I've read on here before that RME biodiesel rots rubber components in the fuel delivery system and so cannot be used in pugs. i was wondering if MWVF can be used as theres a place not to far away from me that sells it at 75p per litre and that would be a nice little saving

Pull one from a scrapped car. Every XUD turbo engine has this little strainer, and you can get to it fairly easily if the car you are working on is on top of another. If you're sneaky, you can put the feed pipe back in, and drop the strainer in your tool box (along with all your other bits and pieces). Helps if you're there to buy a load of other...

Hi,
I had to have the turbo reconditioned on my 306 Dturbo just over a year ago.
The problem I have is that there was a plastic filter in the oil feed pipe to the turbo that had disitegrated.
The local Pug dealership recons that they don't sell the filter and running without it won't cause a problem as it is only there for when the engine is new?...
