Re the 407 door seal issue and airbag warnings, after a few days of rain and testing with the hose, I gave up as water was still pooling on top of the bottom door seal and then running inside the car.

My solution was to put a few holes thru the seal with a leather hole punch tool which seems to allow the water to exit (the door seal gets squashed...

Mines 49 mpg so far in a 1994 ZX Aura TD with 63k on it.

What size are the fuel lines (low pressure feed and return) on a Xantia TD? Are they 6&8mm or 7&9mm? Only asking becasue 6mm/8mm I can get on the way home tonight, but 7 or 9mm requires a GSF order!!

If you mean the one at the front of the engine, then yes it is OK. Having recently done this for the first time myself on a 97 1.9TD with AC I know what you mean. Here's my suggestions. Drop the under shield (the sphere will not come out otherwise...... trust me I tried!). I used a large jubilee clip threaded into a piece of old bike inner...

Yes, its a round brillo ring, and the downpipe is secured by 2 long bolts with springs to provide some flexibility.
Theres a kit available from Citroen with new ring, springs, nuts, bolts,washers etc: 179874 £15.20. For some reason we don't do it at GSF

Can't believe they are Henry parts.
Most probably they are either Bosch or Valeo parts - might be used on Henry's with their logo on as genuine OEM parts - often the case with most car-parts.
Not yet had the hassle with an ABS fitted car - but would definately believe the same type of sensors are used on many odd makes & models.
At least all PSA's...

As far as the seat is concerned it is more than likely that one or more of the screws holding the lever mechanism to the seat has fallen out. You will probably find the screw under the seat, just pull away the plastic trim around the seat base in order to gain access to the now vacant hole and screw away!

Well the Xantia seems to be suffering a fault about every 4 days at the moment! Pulled handbrake on on Saturday and ping, snapped the nipple off one of the cables. Not wanting to sell my soul to the Cit dealer (who may or may not have been open given that they only open every other Sat now!) I bodged it up with a clamp on the end of the cable...

A clonk from the front under hard braking? Could be that dog you were trying to avoid .
You don't mention if the clonk is a one-off or a series of vibrations. And is it only hard braking? There are many things which can cause such a noise. Worn cv joints, suspension/steering bushes, engine mounts etc. I assume you have done a good visual check?...

The problem you describe is symtematic of one of the door locks not locking correctly. I have had this problem on two Xantias and on both occaisions the n/s/f door lock was to blame. Did you check the function of the thermostat before fitting it? It definately sounds like a thermostat problem to me. Is the radiator getting warm/hot? You may also have a probelm with air pockets in the cooling system. See elsewhere on this site for advoce on bleeding the cooling system.

We have the clonks from our ZX TD at 120,000mls+. When I have time I'll drop the subframe and do all four regardless of apparent condition.
Tacho sender is on the engine near the flywheel...often hard to see if very oily in that area. You should be able to trace it from the wire going over the transmission to it.

Sh!t happens
The slightest fiddling in wheel arches may cause an ABS wheel sensor to disrupt in it's cabling. They are very sensible stuff.
Try find any sensor cable connectors as near sensor as possible - then disjoint connectors and do an ohm's measurement out the sensor.
You must have a reading in vicinity of 1K ohms on good sensors & cables....

Worst case scenario would be that you had to take the rad out so as to be able to remove the top engine mounting and pull the engine forwards a bit, not a nice thought because disturbing the cooling system brings about its own set of problems, namely the crummy clipped in pipe connections to the rad which rust up and lock themselves in.

I'd suspect the motor electrical multiplug -
Any minor corrosion will make it unreliable.
The wiper motor's parking switch is build-in to the motor mechanism - fiddly to service - if at all possible.
The dash control switch is known to cause problems too.
The wiper arms are retained on the splines with a nut ?
Known to seem welded on if you try...

Could be a glow plug - why not test them for continuity by removing the connection on the top and then connecting a meter or a bulb in series.
If one has failed the rest will follow shortly - so replace all.

I believe you have a temp sensor and a small blower fan to keep the sensor supplied with air inside the dash duct.
The small fan should be running constantly.

Is this the pull type as on a 1.9TD or 2.0l petrol, if so its not too difficult to get the box back on without disturbing the bearing, providing you are lifting it by mechanical means, if you are trying to manhandle it into place then you will have a hard time lining it up.
I just position the bearing and fork and it goes together no trouble, not...

The brake disc sits on the outside of the hub itself. The two countersunk screws are simply there for the convenience of fitting etc. The wheel bolts pass through the disc and secure it and the wheel to the hub.

It may be worth removing the 'up-down' button on the door in question and seeing if it then unlocks OK with the plip.

Personally I find that an old Robinsons squash bottle fits quite well.
If no luck there, then fill the system with as much coolant as possible and heat the engine up with the radiator cap off. When the coolant starts to expand replace the cap, allow the engine to run for maybe 5 more minutes causing pressure within the system.

My 96 2.0i Xantia estate won't do the aerobics properly. It rises to the full height from the normal setting and down to the lowest setting ok from there. If you then go back to the high setting the front goes up but the back stays down at the low point. Returning to the normal setting sends everything back to normal again ie the front goes down...

Jacking up back end of Xantia estate

I used a length of 75mm square timber long enough to reach all the way across the back of the car.Place this under the chassis rail that the towing eye is fastened to then place a trolley jack in the centre and jack up.Use axle stands or bricks slightly forward of the rear wheels and slowly lower the car onto them to take the weight.

non return valves

Reading the thread on the primer pump leads me to ask if there is a valve in the rear screen washer line for the 97 Xantia Estate.
Mine seems to allow the fluid to drain back to the tank and I have to hold the pump switched on for say 30 seconds before any fluid emerges.
Sweeping a dry (but dirty) screen cannot be good for the wiper blade.

205-60 tyres on 185-65 Xantia rims ?

Just a quicky, your car at present has 5.5 rims and the ones with 205 section tyres have 6 rims. Its usually Ok to go up a size of tyre on the same rim.....maybe you should source the wider wheels???

Well i should imagine most learned people are doing like me and waiting until they hear the glowplug relay click out!
I dont trust the light, especially since as the car gets older the light seems to go out quicker!
I believe that the light stays on for a period partly determined by how cold the engine bay temperature is!

When the engine was in the final stages of design/ prototype stage, the manafacturers involved could not decide on how long to keep the glow plug light on when starting up, The general opinion was that the light should be on for at least 5 seconds more when the engine is cold,...

Thanks for the tip, Paranoid.
I have to agree about the latest Hayne's manuals. They seem to have lost the plot, with minimal diagnostic information. The book I have for my BX is better than the Xantia one. There seems to be a drift towards the if it's not working, replace different bits until it is school of thought.

Hi
The tubes you refer to are not removeable, I presume you have pulled the plug leads off the top of each plus now just remove the plugs with proper socket. When refitting, they only tighten to 11 ftlb so no swinging on the end of the wrench (indeed a torque wrench is definitely advised until you get the feel of how little the plugs need to be...

Does that 2.1TD lump start no problem & runs clean a few seconds after start ?
The engine does not seem slightly dislocated in engine bay ?
Can you in fact feel/see the (stopped & cold) engine move by hard rocking it by hand - especially lower part ?
I'm looking for difference in compression on cylinders - and/or any duff engine...

What reasons do you have for thinking that a new rack is required ? My experience is that steering racks are durable and rugged.
If a problem were to emerge in the steering train, control issues are probably with the hydraulic ram that performs power assistance function (worn seals, or stiction due to dirt/lubrication failure) ; maybe the valve...

does the TZD that you have got vented discs? If so then they are the same! Cit only did two caliper options on the BX either Bendix Normal or Bendix Vented, and none in between!

Got this idle problem on a 16 valve xantia, and i'm fishing for new ideas! It runs ok but if you let it idle when warm it eventuly slows down then stalls. Had the ECU memories read and no faults recorded and also checked the air/water temp signals are ok. Also the manifold senser ok. Plugs are citroen approved and brand new. I am going to look at...

Another thing on my list of non working bits on the Xantia is the headlamp washers. Must be a common thing as they packed up on the last one too, but I never got around to tracing the cause. I know they work from a timed relay if you wash the screen with the dipped beam on, but I never managed to find out which of the numerous relays it was....

I am going to need new tyres on my 1997 VSX soon. Do you know if the alloys are the same? The tyres on mine are 205 R15. Perhaps a swap (with a financial incentive) would be possible?

- the heat will constantly overheating the brake disc - and then it may crack - leading to sudden wheel blockage.

There is no excuse to drive a car with brake problems
- it's such a fatal problem that the car MUST be repaired NOW - or you take the bus/bike - period

Just in the middle of taking the front struts off the grey one, but it would appear I don't have a crrectly sized deep set socket for the nut that claps the strut to the hub.
Any ideas what size this is? I've a feeling it's 16mm but would like this confirmed before I go and buy a new socket.

recently a friend of mine did a hub conversion (from four studs to five studs) on his Honda. He said I may be able to do the same to my Citroen AX (three studs to four studs). The problem is..where the hell can I get suitable wheel hubs for the AX. Are there any conversion kits for the AX in the market today ?
