Hi,after having a big fuel pump leak,i locked my pump pulley, unbolted and removed the pump and had it serviced, pump is now fine, however,it dosen't have a woodruff key,its just a tapered end and foolishly i didn't make any necessary markings, can i put the pump in and re-time it with the engine set to TDC or am i screwed?,i'm out of my depth,do i now have to send the pump away again to be timed?,and must i include the pulley and flange as well,so would then have to remove the timing belt, what a pickle i'm in..
Advice anyone please?

The pump is only timed by its position relative to the crankshaft. However, you do need to know that it is on the right firing stroke. There must a timing mark on the pump somewhere so that you know you have the right cylinder in reference, but I don't know what... There's a Haynes manual specific to the XUD engine which no doubt explains it.

Is this an XUD engine? Turbo or non turbo?
Surely there has to be some sort of woodruff key?

Hi,thanks for replys,It's a XUD engine, peugeot expert 1.9,non turbo,my silly mistake, the key fell out somewhere when removing the pump,i guess if i can buy one,you slot it back in,then manually turn pump to approx position,of the keyhole on the flange which i locked when bolting the spindle, slot pump back in again, attach all fuel lines, and then fine tuning if required,is by setting engine to TDC and using a reader plugged in the other end of pump, not experienced with that, but hopefully it might start and i could drive to a garage...

Hi Jason, the key is only needed for location/timing purposes and does not transmit drive - that's all done by the taper and a tight nut!
I'd simply make up a substitute key - it can even be a bit of plastic if you don't feel like bashing metal.... Then reassemble...
I know and feel your pain about how the key likes to make a bid for freedom I've always stuffed loads of rags around the area to catch the errant key
Do have a good look for the lost key - the very last thing you want is for it to get tangled up in the cam belt - it will end in tears if it does. I've seen the aftermath
