DS3 P0014 fault advice

Unread post by Bigsy »

Need some advice as my partner's 2015 DS3 timing belt disintegrated blocking the vacuum pump and stopping the brakes working. A mechanic has since replaced the belt and pump to the tune of £1400. While I was giving it a test run after this work had been done it developed another fault - I read the ecu myself and it was P0014 exhaust camshaft dephasing coherence.

The mechanic said it was probably a blocked VVT exhaust solenoid by some rubber dislodged by running the car. That made sense and I changed this part myself as it was cheap and simple, but still the problem persisted after clearing the ECU.

We got the same mechanic again to try and sort this out but he's not sure what's causing it he can only think to replace the exhaust camshaft dephaser and wants another £340 labour + the part cost. But I'm not sure what to do here as I don't want to keep giving him money, he can always claim its bits of rubber migrating and blocking more things - but also it could simply be him putting something back together incorrectly.

What would people's advice be here? Ay him more get the work done with him and cross fingers? Another garages advice, something else entirely... something he might have forgot to check?

Thanks for any advice really unsure on how to proceed.

Is this an EB2 engine with wet belt?

If so and the belt has shredded, you'll have blockages in the oil sump filter and elsewhere, which can lead to catastrophic failure of the engine, so make sure any debris has been entirely eliminated.

Obviously we can't diagnose the extent of any damage or what has actually occurred on a forum, and it is important to note that destruction of the timing belt can in some cases lead to the replacement of the engine depending on the severity of the damage and the outcome of the tests that the dealer would run, had you taken it there.

Officially for the EB2ADT engine that shows one or more of the faults P0011 or P0014, with the engine diagnostic lamp illuminating the cause is as a result of the destruction of the timing belt. The belts on these must be checked annually and depending on model be replaced at about 64k miles.

Diagnostic / checks the dealership would do in the event of either of these fault codes:

Check:
  • Of the condition of the vacuum pump oil filter
  • Of the condition of the oil pump strainer
  • Of the condition of the filters of the 2 variable timing solenoid valves
  • Of the condition of the camshaft bearings no. 4
Replacement:
  • Of the vacuum pump (if necessary)
  • Of the oil pump (if necessary)
  • Of the oil pump solenoid valve
  • Of the timing belt
  • Of the lower oil sump (Steel version only)
  • Of the oil filter
  • Of the banjo bolt of the turbocharger oil connection and its seals
  • Of the engine (if necessary)
Cleaning:
  • Of the oil pump strainer (if necessary)
  • Of the filters of the 2 variable timing solenoid valves (if necessary)
  • Draining and filling the engine oil circuit.
Parts required depending on results of the checks:
  • 1 Vacuum pump(Part No. depending on vehicle specification) (if necessary).
  • 1 Timing belt (Part No. depending on vehicle specification).
  • 1 Steel lower engine oil sump(Part No. depending on vehicle specification) (if necessary).
  • 1 Banjo bolt (Part No. 98 029 314 80) (if necessary).
  • 2 Seals(Part No. 0376 64) (if necessary).
  • 2 Oil filters(Part No. depending on vehicle specification) (if necessary).
  • 2 Drain cap seals(Part No. depending on vehicle specification) (if necessary).
  • 1 Oil pump(Part No. depending on vehicle specification) (if necessary).
  • 1 Oil pump solenoid valve(Part No. depending on vehicle specification).
  • 1 Feeler gauge (For checking the camshaft bearings no. 4) (Part No. 16 840 337 80).
  • 1 Engine (Part No. depending on vehicle specification) (if necessary).

Thanks, its a wet belt that went at about 50k miles unfortunately - I understand all the reservations about possible damage etc. and the mechanic went through all this with me, and afaik checked as much as he could and cleaned as well as he could. The only obvious fault showing originally was the blocked vacuum pump so it seemed worth giving it ago to replace belt and pump and clean/flush etc.

My uncertainty now is that the P0014 fault appeared after all the work had been done and it seems perhaps that the bit he wants to replace now would have been protected by the filter in the vvt solenoid (which wasn't at fault but replaced anyway) and just maybe the car may have been put back together incorrectly? I'm just wondering what people would do in my current predicament
