Transmission problems: 2016 Peugeot Traveller rough shifting into 1st and 2nd gear

Unread post by JLobster »

have a 2016 Peugeot Expert Traveller van, 2.0 HDI 150HP with 215k KM manual.
Shifting into 1st and 2nd is rough when the car is in motion, even 5km/h.
It feels like I cannot push the car into gear, it is just stuck when going into either 1st or 2nd from neutral, all other gears work fine.
If the car is standing still, I can smoothly shift into all gears (regardless if the car is switched on or not).
Clutch was changed at 140k Km.
The local Peugeot expert shop in Vienna wants to charge 15h of work for working on the transmission, they say 4000-5000€.

I just changed the gear oil, noticed that the condition persisted after the change, on the drive back from the mechanic's.
Any insight into the issue?

I would suspect that the synchro is worn to the point that it's not longer really serviceable/useable. The 1st and 2nd gears are generally the most used in a vehicle and thus get the most wear which is probably why yours are no longer functioning, in theory all gears will reach this point but thats pretty much unheard of.

There are a few other possible causes such as a clutch being worn or clutch pedal adjustment not being correct but most cars are auto adjusting or hydraulic which compensates for wear.

Unfortunately i would suspect your looking at a gearbox strip down and thats not a cheap job, particularly labour wise. I've had similar issues myself and used a product called "Slick 50 manual gearbox treatment" but in reality that wont fix a worn out part.

There's plenty of youtube videos covering gearbox issues with worn synchro's ( example - ) so have look at a couple.
Music keeps me going.
