Upcoming service disruptions! December 2024

Unread post by xantia_v6 »

Over the next month I will need to take the forum offline a few times in preparation to a move to a new hosting company. The current company has been providing very good service at a good price for the last 10 years, but have decided to shut down rather than upgrade to more modern hardware.

We have selected a new hosting company which has offered a better, faster, bigger VPS at a slightly higher cost (which we can afford).

I intend to do all the maintenance and testing in the window of 00:00 to 05:00 UK time, on about 2 nights per week, with the intention of having the move complete by 20/12/2024. I won't be giving any further notice of outages which fall into those windows.

Due to some (self-inflicted) difficulties in getting the new server configured, and an upcoming holiday, I won't be switching over to the new server until the first week of January 2025. I may still take the existing server offline for brief periods of testing.

I have now moved the forum to the new server. Almost everything should be working normally (and a little quicker :-D ).
There may be some issues with images not displaying properly in some old (>5 years) posts. I need to do some more testing of that.
Let me know if you spot any other changes to the forum behaviour.

I have the impression that some pages have a delay during loading. I am investigating this.

I saw that happen early this morning Mike but now (0750GMT) all is nice and fast...

I did find submitting a reply to a long thread took a while...

EDIT: This reply submitted at the expected rapid speed :)

It is sometimes difficult to judge from here due to the long response times, but I have had a couple of responses take several seconds.
The BXC forum running on the same server does not seem to have the same issues.

Huuuuge lack of response to any buttons tapped on (on my phone - haven't switched my laptop on yet) and failure to refresh pages. And then it's OK again.

Also had to log in again as the cookies were presumably different.

Laptop is much better although response doesn't seem to be as immediate as it used to be. Almost as if the system is taking a short intake of breath before responding.

I didn't need to log in again though.

Just had a looooong delay (blank page and the spinning wheel of doom) during a forum search which ultimately failed and dumped me back without a result.

I tried a refresh, and it took around 30 seconds. A later attempt ended up timing out.

Watching paint dry has become a sprint contest compared to the site at times!

I was beginning to think the same but it was the interweb on strike again.

For me currently, often OK and sometimes slow... Responding to posts can be a bit variable...
