Unread post by Olu504-1988 »

Hello Everyone,

Good to be here and thanks for having me.

My 1988 504 is overheating so was wondering if anyone has any advice. I have more info but because this is my first post I have kept brief.

Thanks in anticipation

Welcome to the forum.

Can you give us some more background information? Is the engine otherwise running normally?
What checks have you already done?

When we see more information the better.
However with its age and origin I would first recommend a new or refurbished radiator. I’m sure the core will be full of s***. By the look of one of the images it has the old Peugeot electro magnetic cooling fan hub? If so does it work? The fan should be free to spin by hand (engine off ). switch ignition on, short the two wires together,on the radiator sensor, you should hear a click and the fan should go solid. As it’s an African spec’ 504 there may be stuff I’m not familiar with.

Thanks for the super fast response, it does run normally on one time start, but it runs a bit high...I tried to adjust the running by tightening the screw in the carburetor picture but it wont go any further. With the overheating; from cold the water in the radiator start to get hot within minutes; when I leave the cap off and rev the engine even when cold, the coolant heaves up. There is no trace of oil or dirt in the water. The switch at the top of the radiator is connected to the AC fan which is different from the pulley fan that you see in the picture. The AC works but I do not turn it on because of the overheating. Not sure why the switch is connected to the top of the radiator but its for the electric fan just outside the AC condenser

I am also looking for an Haynes Manual for the car if anyone knows where I may be able to buy one. Haynes have it out of publication

Thanks again and I look forward to your guidance..

The sensor I’m talking about is at the bottom of the radiator. The electro magnetic hub is fitted to the water pump spindle. You can see the white plastic fan in one of your photos.

Thinking about this? As your 504 is African spec’ with AC, it may NOT have the electro magnetic hub.
Easy to find out, with the engine off, try the fan blades. If it spins free it has the hub, if it’s solid it does not.
