Checking and filling gearbox oil on the GS looks sufficiently awkward that it probably rarely gets done.
Is there an easy way?

Re: Filling gearbox
Luckily I did mine when the engine/gearbox was out.
Nigh impossible from above, and I suspect the car will be up in the air high enough (and level) to get access with a long flexible tubed plastic bottle from beneath. It's been a while since I got under there.

Re: Filling gearbox
I did this a couple months ago, it's a huge pain as the oil is thick. Use the largest tube you can that fits in the filling hole of the gearbox. You might need an assistant below to hold the tube in unless you tuck it in carefully. The worst part of doing it was that every time we spilled some, my hands got oily and that made it hard to hold the tube.
What kind of gearbox oil are you using?

Re: Filling gearbox
I've been told that one can fill by removing the reverse light switch and using its hole and fill till it runs out of the level plug. This might help?
I have plenty of EP90 and was thinking of using that though I believe that the manual says EP80. I doubt it would make that much difference in an old worn box...maybe.

Re: Filling gearbox
Interesting! I never thought of doing that.
I filled mine with Royal Purple 75W-90, which claims to be safe for yellow metals. This is the oil I started using two cars ago. I always had some left over after filling the gearbox, so I'd buy more to fill the next one, and as I result I've not tried other brands.

Re: Filling gearbox
We find it quite difficult to change from 2nd to 3rd without a crunch (4 speed). All other actions up and down are fine. It is wishful thinking to imagine double checking the oil will sort this out but no harm in trying!
(California? A GS would be a great way to travel the coast road/Big Sur etc)

Re: Filling gearbox
That sounds more like a problem with the synchro spring on third. Options may be either replacement of the spring (necessitating engine/gearbox removal) or practicing double de-clutching from 2nd to 3rd.Wollop wrote: 30 Oct 2024, 09:39 We find it quite difficult to change from 2nd to 3rd without a crunch (4 speed).
