Black Smoke from Exhaust When Accelerating - Partner 1.6 BlueHdi 73kW 2019

Unread post by karutsenko »

Hello everyone,

I recently bought a Peugeot Partner 2019 1.6 BlueHDi with only 20,000 km on it. I’ve noticed that black smoke comes from the exhaust, especially when I accelerate. The car seems to run fine otherwise, but this issue concerns me.

Could anyone help me understand what might be causing this? Is it a common issue with this engine, and what should I check or do to resolve it?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Welcome!

This shouldn't smoke at all, if it does then the DPF is broken, or someone has been there and removed it.

Thank you for the welcome!

The DPF is definitely there; I’ve visually confirmed it. I doubt it’s damaged, as the DPF light came on briefly and then went off after a few minutes. While the light was on, I noticed the smoke increased about fivefold, which suggests to me that the filter is functioning and was likely just in the regeneration process. So, I don't think the problem lies directly with the DPF filter.

The DPF should catch all soot / smoke. Stick your finger in the exhaust tail pipe it should be spotless - if not then the DPF is broken.

Thank you for the tip!

The DPF is definitely there—I’m attaching a photo of the black residue I found. It seems like something may not be working properly, but I’m unsure how to confirm or fix it. Any advice on what steps I should take?

Thanks in advance!

I think you're misunderstanding what we're saying:

The physical catalyst / DPF outer housing may be there, but that doesn't mean the particle filter hasn't been removed internally.....

If you provide your VIN I'll be able to see which engine this is. Please post your VIN in full without spaces - it will be automatically masked from public view after submitting your post & will only be visible to staff.

It needs a replacement DPF, but it may be that a previous owner has had it mapped out, in which case it will be difficult to re-instate it.

I spoke with the previous owner, and he confirmed that the DPF is definitely there and hasn’t been tampered with in any way. I trust his word, so I’m assuming the filter is original and hasn’t been modified.

So I just wanted to check the version of vehicle and can confirm that on this one, the DPF is not in the front catalyst unit (on some they have a catalytic converter / DPF combo in the same housing), so this one has the separate DPF further down the exhaust line.

I suggest you get some live data on it to see what the readings are and pop the screenshots up here.

Thanks for confirming the DPF setup on this vehicle.

Could you let me know what specific data I need to collect? I’ll send the screenshots here once I have the necessary readings.

The main parameter to look at is the differential pressure of the DPF and the variation of this pressure with engine RPM. I have the same issues, DPF worn message and black smoke and sadly I found out that the previous owner has been there and destroy the DPF.

There are two options. The exhaust smoke have to go through the DPF filter. There is no way that black smoke comes from DPF if it is functioning properly.

1) The DPF is broken in some way. Remember, people lie. It can be gutted on the inside. Or it could have gotten hit on the exhaust and the filtering material fell apart. Crawl under the car and shake the exhaust. If you hear rattling from the DPF filter, it is fallen apart.
2) The DPF is not functioning properly because of high milage (you got clocked car).

There is slight chance that the DPF is "working" but the car smokes so much that it can't manage to filter out everything. In that case focus on faulty injectors, a clogged EGR valve or the MAF sending incorrect data. All these seems very unlikely due to the very low mileage. But it could happen in the car was driven only a few killometers per trip in town...

I’ve removed the DPF and checked it—there are no cracks, and it looks functional.
