Steering Inner Tie Rod Removal - C5 and others

Unread post by aspire_helen »

There are a few threads (X7, Aircross, C4, Xsara Picasso, 206) relating to the removal of a steering inner tie rod, but nothing definitive for the C5. I am happy with the specialist tools necessary to grip the ball joint housing to unscrew it, although a specific proven recommendation would be welcome eg knuckle tool. However, Citroen specify a tool to clamp the steering rack output shaft whilst the ball joint is unscrewed, to prevent damage to the rack. The Citroen tool appears to use 4 bolts to clamp the tool around the output shaft, which then jams against an adjacent structure to jam the output shaft. Has anyone any recommendations on how to do this without the Citroen tool?
Regarding manuals, Haynes C5 doesn’t even mention it, although they do specify the tightening torque for “inner ball joint to steering rack”. Neither does the French RTA for the C5. However, the Haynes Peugeot 406 recommends “if necessary, prevent the steering rack from turning by holding it carefully with a pair of grips. Take care not to mark the surfaces of the rack and ball joint”.
I have trawled Youtube videos for various makes, including professional (Autodoc) for the C3, C4 and various Peugeots, and not one clamps the steering rack output shaft; they just grip the ball joint housing and unscrew it. One video shows the tie rod removal with the steering rack removed from the car, and he successfully uses grips to clamp the output shaft. Is there something special about the C5 that makes the clamping tool essential?
Finally, is it possible to post this to Peugeot forums as well?
