Gearbox fault repair needed message on dash

I have a 2010 auto Citroen C4 grand picasso and occasionally when I turn the ignition on I get the service light come on and a message saying 'gearbox fault repair needed' it usually goes off once I've moved the selector a couple of times but on three occasions now when I've come to put it in neutral before switching the engine off it won't come out of A1 can anyone help with what could be the fault thank you in advance

It will really need to be scanned to find out what the error is. Given that fiddling the selector sometimes makes it work it could be the selector - the solder joints go dry. But it could equally be indicative of an impending clutch problem....

Our car did odd things, and I think this was one of them, when the battery was starting to go bad. My tip is to check and/or change the battery.
