Thinking on buying a 508
Hi All, I am thinking of buying a 508 for the wife a 2013 one.. What are the main failure points on them to look for. Is the 1.6 more or less reliable or is it much of a muchness.

Re: Thinking on buying a 508
Engines are the same across the marques, but impossible to answer this without knowing which 1.6, as there are variants.
The heater systems on these can be awkward to get to and fix if the plastic rods fail, so can leave air stuck at the last set temperature or direction when they go. Rod kits are available though.
I think the best thing is to read through some reviews from Parkers or other sources to get a handle on how these have performed reliability wise now that there is historical data available from owners.

Re: Thinking on buying a 508
The C5 X7 had a 110 HDi (DV6TED4) or the DV6C in their line up.
The earlier 508 only had the DV6C and DV6FC
The DV6TED4 on the X7 was of course a 16 Valve engine.
The DV6C, DV6D, DV6FE, DV6FD & DV6FC variants were all 8 valve engines of different power outputs and SOHC.

Oh that's interesting I thought they were exactly the same engine. Is the 2.0 hdi the same as the C5

Re: Thinking on buying a 508
On another note I was given the opportunity to borrow a Hyundai ionic 5 for the weekend. It's an interesting experience driving an EV. I find the quiet disconcerting and it has memory seats so slides you in and out of driving position. I've never had that before. I also don't like the way it actually corrects the steering. I don't think I am ready to give a car the level of control it seems to require. So not for me apart from the price tag of course.

The 2.0 engines are pretty much the same as the X7s: DW10BTED4 (138 / 140), DWCTED4 (163), DW10FD (150) DW10FC (180).darbuck wrote: 21 Sep 2024, 19:25 Oh that's interesting I thought they were exactly the same engine. Is the 2.0 hdi the same as the C5

Ok that's grand so I'll go with a 2.0 so. One that's running well of course taxed and tested. Thanks for the clarification Marc

Take a look in this youtube guy (funny too) as he was a mechanic in 100 Ford Mondeo taxis with FW10 series engine. It will help you with the problems that he came across as most of the cars made up 500K miles. We are talking for a serious amount of knowledge about this engine. The main problems usually are thermostat, EGR valves, fuel pump oil leaks, and some other things that you have to watch out about this engine.darbuck wrote: 22 Sep 2024, 18:41 Ok that's grand so I'll go with a 2.0 so. Re: Thinking on buying a 508
On our 308, Active is about second or third in trim and equipment specification while Allure is the next level up.
What the precise differences for the 508 are I don't know but maybe halogen/xenon headlamps, manual/electronic handbrake, manual/motorised door mirror parking, etc.

Re: Thinking on buying a 508
Trim levels (and the equipment contained within them) changed throughout production run and often changed 3 times a year. So you'd really need to see a brochure relative to the build date for exact specs. Then of course there are any options that would of been added at time of purchase by the owner. So not a question that can be definitively answered Darrendarbuck wrote: 27 Sep 2024, 17:11 Ok so I have a choice between a 508 active and an allure what is the difference. Mileage is similar.

I did find this general info though for the range at the ttime:
You may want to check out the reviews on Auto Express which only gave it 2 stars, here:There are four trim levels available, starting with the Active which comes with Emergency Brake Assist, ESP, cruise and climate control and a touchscreen satnav with Bluetooth and DAB radio. Allure adds electric seat adjustment, parking sensors and reversing camera, blind spot monitoring, keyless entry and a panoramic sunroof on SW models.
