P0341 Camshaft fault code after changing camshaft. Also no timing hole in flywheel.

Unread post by Gazza_rose »

Evening Guys,

I'm new here, having not long bought my '18 Peugeot Expert 2.0 and up until now had no problems.

Just to fill the full story in, I've recently started my own company after my old boss retired and close the company. I bought the van off them, and in turn they had it for a year, and it was work van during that time so I have known the van for a year, but only actually owned it for a couple of months.

The van has just gone past 80k, so while I was on holiday last week I left the van with a mechanic friend so do the belt while I was away. When I got back he said it was all fine except they couldn't find the timing hole in the flywheel. They had to do the timing by marking with a white pen. The van had a clutch cylinder fault last year, and while the van was in having that done, between me and my old boss we agreed to a new clutch and flywheel while it was all apart. It appears then that the aftermarket flywheel hasn't got a hole. I used the van for a few short runs yesterday and all was fine. This morning I went out to the van and it started on the button, but also came up with the check engine light. I turned the van off and tried to restart and it cranked for 4-5 seconds before starting. I rang my friend who did the belt who lives in the same street as me and we plugged in the OBD reader and it returned P0341, Camshaft sensor fault. We reset it and off I went to work armed with his spare OBD reader. It was fine driving in, but then when I came home it started fine, but threw up the EML, I cleared the fault and it was fine for the 30 mins to another job. I was there 20 mins, then when I tried to restart it did the long crank, but did then start. I went from there straight to my friends garage, and we've checked the marks and they still line up so it hasn't jumped a tooth. A bit of googling suggests that without locking the flywheel, the timing can be '1/2' a tooth out and cause the same fault. He's picking up a cam sensor in the morning to try and eliminate that in case its just a coincidence, but my money is on the slightly out timing.

Are there any other marks to use to set the timing? The tensioner was setup correctly, but I guess that could be out if the base timing is out. That weird 'floating' crank pulley obviously holds the answer to all this, but I just don't know how we are going to hold it all in the correct position to set it all. Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks
