I've been seeing people innocently posting on the Peugeot Boxer FB groups pages on a daily basis over the last few months asking why their heating is cold having already spent good money on the thermostat assembly. Invariably more wised up members are diagnosing these as pump failures despite having had a new one fitted recently
there's no warning system on these engines, despite a history of premature pump failures, as the only sign its gone is when there is a lack of heater output. The coolant gauge doesn't shift risking an expensive cylinder head job especially in the hot summer months when the blower is not required, Hopefully someone can come up with a solution but thats really the job of Peugeots engineers.
Tempted to look at some kind of thermocouple gauging and audible warning myself but not seeing much on offer so open to other ideas

Re: Possible reto fitted warning systems for water pump failure DW engines
Cant really think how you would do it. The Water pump on the later Relay/Boxer with DW engines are a massively common failure. A plastic impeller pressed onto a metal shaft that constantly heats & cools is destined to fail. The problem is when you get a new genuine one its exactly the same setup
The VAG group were the first manufacturer is seen using a plastic impeller water pump & that was a failure too, you would think the manufacturers would learn off others mistakes.
To be fair on the PSA Boxer/Relays it is just normally a lack of heat issue when the pump fails, they generally don cause engine overheating problems

update
recently finding out there has been an ECU date to these vans to allow the thermostat to behave differently from cold. The ex Citroen technician posting on the FB group confirms most water pump failures of this engine confined to hard driving van users and rare in cars. With the thermostat closed at start up, high revs were putting excessive pressure on the impellor resulting in separation from its shaft. The latest version of the parts retain the plastic parts as it was apparently never a design issue.
would be interested to know when this update became available as my ECU was last updated by a French garage September 2019

We don't have access to software update releases. These are generally notified to the network if required to be updated on vehicles for specific issues.
