..and the poor old traditional iconic Air Balloon made way for the development, and bit the dust, as had been long trailed...

Pub of the day, visited by us (back in the 80's!), while on a short holiday staying near Stroud in the Slad Valley, setting for "Cider with Rosie", with the gorgeous Painswick not far away.

"Gloucestershire pubs" does a far better presentation of it, with some nice historic images, and even a list of landlords The pub has a great location at the top of a hill, but maybe thrives on an escape from traffic jams from the converging roads, and the need-a-break trade from hot and bothered motorists at the junction of the well used roads.

The pub takes its name from the pioneering balloon flights that took place on the Cotswold escarpment in 1784, just a year after the Montgolfier brothers first took to the air in a balloon in Paris. The pub was known as the Balloon in 1796 and had become the Air Balloon in 1802.
