Laguna Gearbox problems

I have a 1996 Renault laguna 1.8RT.
I am having trouble changing gears, they crunch with the cluch fully depressed and have to be rammed into gear.
When i am driving in 5th ,the slightest pressure on the cluch increases the revs but it does not slip going up hills etc.
Is this the clutch, i was just wondering before i pay to have a new one fitted.
Also, in second gear when the revs are in the red and the limiter kicks the car is only doing around 38mph. Is this normal for my car? It just doesnt feel right.

Degsy,
I don't know if the Laguna has a clutch adjustment or not, but the symptoms you describe are classic slipping clutch. I wouldn't lose too much sleep about the gearbox as the problems the car is displaying should disappear once the clutch is sorted.

I have a 1996 2.2 Diesel Laguna
Gearbox dropped in bits in 1998
and again last Thurs, symptoms same as yours
GET IT LOOKED AT!!!!
cost 1,300 last time to repair "had to import box from France" £300 to import. We might have found a box Not sure yet.
I am convinced the kick-back from this large engine is too strong for the box.
