Amongst the other things wrong...
The Speedo was" ticking "when I bought it, the mileometer and odometer had already stopped
Working. Anyway it has stopped completely now. The cable looks like it's secured properly at the dash, at the gearbox end there is a bit of up and down movement of the plastic connecter, is this where the problem is ? Don't want to take ( more ) bits apart that I have to !

The lower end of the cable goes into the splitter, and there is quite a lot of play there. I had the same thing happen so, after a fashion, I pressed the connector in as far as I could, then routed the rest of the cable in a way that it would keep the connector in place.
