clio 1.4 rt, no spark??

Unread post by chrisichella »

Hi,
My partner had trouble starting her Renault Clio 1.4 Auto a few weeks ago So I popped to the local halfords and bought a new set of plugs and leads, which i fitted in and it then started absolutly fine till yesterday when it left her stranded in a tesco car park.
She called out the RAC who said there was no spark but managed to get it it going and suggested that the 'crank angle sensor' (which I must confess ive never heard of) may be on its way out and it would probably be a Renault dealer job to fix it.
Knowing the costs this would incur I am reluctant to give it to the dealers for this at the moment so I am trying to see about some of the cheaper things that might cause the problem.
My first thoughts are to replace the coil as i think this can cause it (im not the greatest diy mechanic tho) and run an injector cleaner incase its because a blockage forming in the fuel lines.
Has anyone got any more suggestions I can try before I have to pay out at the dealer?

Hi
I would take off one of the plug leads put an old or spare spark plug in it hold the lead ,in a dry cloth to save your self a shock
against the block and get someone to crank the engine you should get a strong white spark , if the spark there is weak or no spark
hold the lead from the coil in a cloth against the Block for a spark
test if the spark there is good have a look at the HT leads and the condition of the inside of your distributor cap .If you take the the HT leads off mark the order of the leads. any garage with a Son tuning machine should be to be able to tell you any weak points in your ignition system

I would try the local scrapyard for a coil or if you like to spend money try Partco or a Motor Factors if any of your mates work as a mechanic they might get trade discount

If you let me know the part number, I've probably got one, which you could have for a small fee, or the scrapy is a good place to visit.
