Cd/HDD/mb cable
Looking for the cable connecting the dvd/hard drive to the RT4 motherboard to repair a friend's unit. Are these sold separately? Would a laptop cable connecting only the disk work? Connection to motherboard looks similar.

Re: Cd/HDD/mb cable
Having had a closer look it is only that part between the HD and DVD that is damaged.
Theoretically it should work without the DVD as long as the disk connected is configured as Master. Question is if an external USB DVD drive can be used to reinstall 8.31 and maps.

Re: Cd/HDD/mb cable
It will use a standard PATA interface cable, but as far as your laptop goes, only if it is old enough to still have that interface. Most have been SATA for years now. If not, you’ll need a SATA to IDE converter which can be had quite cheaply.

Re: Cd/HDD/mb cable
Got some parts from old laptops with pata interface but the connection to the mobo might differ if not zif.
If the only device connected is the disk it probably doesn't matter if it's configured as master or slave.

Re: Cd/HDD/mb cable
Default connection in these is CD as Master and HDD as Slave for reference.

Re: Cd/HDD/mb cable
as it is not now possible to update the system to 8.31 with the CD, do i just have to burn an iso image to a usb stick?

Re: Cd/HDD/mb cable
The original Hard Drive will have pins set to configure the HDD as 'Slave'. If this is set to Cable Select or Master it won't boot.
The RT4 is capable of running a USB cable (using 4 out of the 6 pins from the CD changer port). A USB cable can be ordered from the dealer (part 6574JH). A USB memory device can then be used to update system software and maps as if it were reading them from a CD ROM. So you should be able to extract the ISO software update disk files onto USB and update without having to faff with the hard drive. Just get an aftermarket cable to replace the knackered one at some point.
If going the USB port upgrade route, just mount the ISO to a PC and extract all files to USB.

Re: Cd/HDD/mb cable
That's interesting because having a cable that only allows devices to be connected in a particular order (CD at end of cable) would suggest that CS would be the default option.
Anyway, extracting the ISO onto the USB and booting ends up in a CRC loop with an error message at the end. Will try with a different stick.

Re: Cd/HDD/mb cable
Using a copy of an original software update CD (8.31) can be fraught with issues, including CRC errors. It's why for those with RT4s without the issues you have on your friend's unit, I recommend buying an original CD from the dealer for a few £s to do the update, as this presents hardly any issues. I suspect it may have something to do with copy protection - but I can't verify that personally. I do know that others that went and bought an original Firmware 8.31 CD, Part Number: 9679242580, costing £7.93 inc. VAT as of today, had no issues.
I appreciate that this doesn't help you now, but worth mentioning for reference.
As for the HDD, there should be jumpered pins that set the HDD to slave to the far left that I have marked with green dots.
When these 2 pins are jumpered then the HDD should be set to Slave with the CD as Master for booting and emergency recovery / update reasons or in case of HDD failure where you need to replace the HDD and use the system firmware to repartition and install the OS.

Re: Cd/HDD/mb cable
I have the original CD and created an ISO image from that. I wouldn't expect firmware to be copyrighted. Think I will give it a try with an external USB cd reader as i think you are right about using copies of the CD (I am sure there is away around this as I prefer to use flash media rather than CD's for updates). The HDD solution works only if the hd has the 4 pins at the right.

Re: Cd/HDD/mb cable
Got a new cable and reconnected everything. The problem now is that the CD player does not grab and load the disk. There is no disk in the player but I could hear it power up when i connected the cable.
