RT3 sat nav - replacing the non nav version

This is the RT3 unit and was made by Magneti Marelli
The RT3 was available in a few different hardware versions, the later ones supporting MP3 playback. These units had an optical connection to the Display Screen.

RT3 sat nav - replacing the non nav version

Post by Harlequin »

Hi all! In my madness i have decided to add the RT3 sat nav , replacing the small hump non nav radio.

So far so good - cut out the hump, removed the small screen, installed the mount and large screen, checked the radio work (and rewired the 3 small wires to the screen - that all works) and the nav even picked up satellites and the phone.

But - when coming to code it on lexia (the joyful beep) ran into a large block. The radio ecu is not detected and the telematics (once enabled in bsi and as present in the cu section) has a ? next to it. Not sure where to go from here?

2005 C5 exclusive.

Hi Simon - I hate to rain on your parade, but there are 2 variations of the RT3, depending on the electrical architecture of the vehicle a CAN and a VAN version - neither are interchangeable, Each is designed to work on a specific architecture - that's also why there is a different firmware for each of these.

Is this the model you have fitted?

You’ve changed your vehicle then, as I posted the units for the MK I.

The later units in the MK II also had a CAN and VAN version too.

sorry editing photos - my car is a 2005 mk1 facelift exclusive, the nav kit came from a 2007 mk 1 exclusive.

The nav kit all works, just not detected in Lexia .

Hmmm i think mine has the wrong firmware - it says 8.31? Pretty sure its supposed to start with a 6.xx? Can it be reflashed?

Hi Simon 8.31? That is not a firmware for the RT3.... That firmware is for the RT4/5 system.

Versions for the RT3 will begin 5.* or 6.* depending on the CAN or VAN version fitted. Your C5 should be the CAN version and the latest available firmware is 6.63 as below. The unit can be bricked if the wrong firmware is applied.

RT3 2001 VAN 5.50
RT3 2002 VAN 5.5D (colour)
RT3 2003 CAN 6.60
RT3 2004 CAN 6.63 (colour)

Hmmm i honestly am at a loss then - it would explain ALOT as it says software version 8.31 .... and its an RT3! It does start sometimes and works though (occasionally). Can the firmware be downgraded?
