Nissan TIIDA cars

I'm not sure if this is the appropriate section mods can move/delete/laugh if it's not. I been looking at Nissan Tiida (silly name) I believe it's based on the older Megane chassis and running gear. They seem quite cheap but are they any good? They would be considered an OAP car in Ireland.

There are lots of them (imported second-hand from Japan) in New Zealand, some of the low-cost car rental companies have whole fleets of them. They are OK around town, but not nice if you are driving any distance or at any speed.

It depends on the model/age, Tiida is Japanese for 'sun' Datsun Sunny comes to mind

I think it's marketed in the UK as the Nissan Pulsar, there's a write up in Auto Express on the Pulsar.

I'm more interested in things like reliability, I had a diesel Mégane a few years ago. Great car to drive easy to run but most days were sensor failure days the electronics were awful. I didn't know it was called pulsar in the UK another old Nissan name

If its reliability you are after in a car that size you will be hard pressed to better a Toyota Corolla. You just have to live with mundanity!!

Can't stand those acres of brown plastic on Toyotas! My reasoning is that if it's French car based I have a huge resource of information when it breaks down if it was to break down. I like the smaller French diesels too. There's not much wrong with my 207 apart from being 3 door which makes it awkward to get the grandkids into it

I think you are in danger of tarring all the Toyotas with one brush there!! I have had 3 Celicas, a Corolla, a Carina, a Camry and a Prius and never seen an inch of brown plastic!!
However I take your point about French base although if you are looking at anything Renault based I would think you may still be open to electrical gremlins!

I agree Mick I had a Camry years ago and it did have a lot of brown plastic. The 1.5 diesel engine is pretty good so I was thinking if the electrics were Japanese it would be a useful little motor. Obviously even thinking about buying one means I don't need power speed or looks

Be a bit wary of anything Japanese (including Corollas) with a CVT transmission, not as reliable as one might expect, expensive to repair and (for some people) really frustrating to drive.

That is the model that I am familiar with (but only the petrol version). Safe, slow, boring...

At least it doesn't have CVT to worry about. The listing says Low Road Tax when the spec lists it at 280 Euros. If that is low what on earth is high over there? With that age and mileage it seems pricey to me, you could get lower both for the same money over here!

Road tax for my 207, 1.4 diesel is almost €400.00 a year pre 2008, a 1.9 diesel like an A4 is around €700.00 a year for tax. I could buy a UK car but the VRT (vehicle registration tax) is usually over 30% of the open market value. This is determined by the gubbermint checking the sale price for similar cars at several dealerships. to find an "average" Life in Ireland is a never ending stream of events where you drop your trousers and bend over so some agency or other can get their share of what you have.
