Restrictions for users with @outlook.com and @hotmail.com addresses - RESOLVED

Post by xantia_v6 »

We cannot currently deliver notification or registration emails to users with @outlook.com an @hotmail.com email addresses.

This is due to Microsoft having designated our server as being a junk mail source, apparently because some users have been moving our notification emails to their 'junk' folders.

There appears to be nothing that we can do about this in the short term. It may resolve itself, or it may not.

This might also be a good idea to remind members that they should review their board notifications and switch off any emails they do not want to be notified of - this may help reduce the number of unnecessary emails sent out:

Click the images to Zoom
  1. Go to your User Control Panel, accessible by clicking your user name at the top right of the Forum as shown below:

  2. Next, choose BOARD PREFERENCES from the tabs displayed:
    Board Notifications B.PNG
  3. Next select EDIT NOTIFICATION OPTIONS
    Board Notifications C.PNG
  4. Now uncheck any email notifications from the list that you do not wish to receive.
Board Notifications D.PNG
Notifications will still show up in the notifications section at the top right of the Forum, so long as you leave these checked in the options, but emails will not be sent unless you check the option.

And if anyone reading this has been in the habit of moving our notifications to their junk folder, could you please drag as many as you can find back into your inbox, as that will improve our reputation rating.

But if the emails are now being blocked by MS then surely it's now too late for most people if the spam folder has been emptied?

They also use data algorithms to determine spam - so the more people that 'un-junk' them, the more this will improve.

Yes but that assumes that they are there to unjunk!

Whenever something in my spam folder I take a look at it and either move it to my inbox (before deleting) or hit the delete button. I keep a very clean spam box!

Don't bin them from the spam file - it alerts the spammers to an active email address, just as if you had opened them.
They will self-purge after 30 days.

Any email in in my spam folder has all links disabled so I can't see how that would happen. Also there's a button there labelled [Empty] which invites being clicked.

This is what I do but some still (very occasionally) end up there.

Finally, after a month of sending repeated support requests to Microsoft, and spending quite a bit of time researching and rewriting some of the forum software to be more RFC compliant, we have been advised that Microsoft are no longer blocking our emails.

Note that in the meantime, to reduce the quantity of bounced emails, we have adjusted the notification settings of some users to switch off email notifications of watched topics and watched forums. If you find that you are not getting the email notifications that you expect, see Marc's post above on changing your notification options.
