NOO oldie

Post by Oletimer »

Hi, At the tender age of 72 I found a Berlingo and it's served me well so far, I've had me van for about 5 or 6 months and decided to look out for a site to get to know any problems I'd be coming up against...
So far, only the horn is giving me any cause for concern - the gearbox apparently is a well known one already - I've got 3rd sorted out and it doesn't scream when I change gear now, just a matter of timing the change and it's ok.
The MOT's up soon so I'll be looking for advice re: the horn.
Been a Ugly bug (Fiat Multipla) boy for a long time before I got the van and I must say I do like em, they're quirky and odd ball, maybe it says something about me? They are comfortable and roomy tho.
Anyway, more later. I'm off for a read of the forum...
George

Hi George and Welcome.

A little info on what the problem with the horn is would be useful and a VIN will help myself and colleagues with technical info that might be required later (VIN will automatically be masked).

The van is a 54reg non turbo, the horn hasn't worked since I've had it, it did operate once and only once and nothing since.
Been told it could be a problem within the steering wheel, but can't see how to remove it.
Any ideas are welcomed

Horn is probably the curly cable from the push in the centre of the wheel to the comm 2000 "they all do that sir". On the rear of the steering wheel are three little holes. In these holes are clips you need to push aside with a small screwdriver. The wheel centre will pop off. Disconnect the battery and leave for 15 mins before you do this to ensure the airbag is disarmed.

Before you do all that though, get a jump lead and attach it to the steering column down by the pedals, and the other end to a good earth. Try the horn. Many have a bad earth... they earth via the column..

Check the horn itself and the connectors on it before going into any more depth, they're quite prone to failure.

Check out the Berlingo in your Profile, too, George.
'2054' will give Marc a real headache, when it comes to looking up parts! #-o

Many apologies for this late reply, I've had a poota problem so have been grounded for a while...
Marc, the VIN: VF7**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff] hopefully, this will help out.
Thank you to those of you gracious enough to offer a solution.
All the best
George
