Activa tyres

Unread post by Sam Skelton »

Hi all,

I've just bought my first Activa - I'm not new to Citroën in general - I also have a Xantia sinker diesel, a CX and an XM. I want to make sure I put the right tyres on it - I want to make the most of the grip, but there really doesn't seem to be much out there in 205/60/15 any more. I know David Hallworth posed this question 2 years ago, but things change in 2 years and the tyre market's moved on. I have a similar issue with my SAAB 9000 Turbo; there don't seem to be any 15" performance tyres about any more, and I'm not messing about with wheel or tyre sizes because of how vital they are to an Activa's performance. I'm not bothered if they're not Michelins either - I'm not keen on Energy Savers on my XM, and I don't really want them on my Activa either.

So what are people running on their Activas?

Thanks,

Sam

Look at uniroyal rainsport 3. They are one of the few that are available in the correct size and ratings for an activa, and dont break the bank. I have had then on a few cars now and do like them. I had them on 17" alloys on my activa, and those wheels and tyres are now on my 1.9td, although with two vredstien winters on the front and the rainsports on the back. They certainly gripped well on the activa, and did not wear out too fast either on a car that was driven as its maker intended.

I'm a big fan of Uniroyals - but I couldn't find Rainsports in 205/60/15. I can only find RainExperts. Been looking for RainSport 3s for my 9000.

If you have a supplier of Rainsports in the right size can you please send me a link? If they're good on Activas, I'll be buying a set for that AND my 9000.

Just an idea, looking at Auto Bild's 2018 tyre test...

Has anyone any experience of the Hankook Ventus Prime 3? The Kinergy Ecos on my sinker are good, but obviously Activas are more sensitive than most.

I think rain experts are newer versions of rainsport3. But they are being phased in gradually. I just got rainsport3 in 205/55/16 for mt seat from a local tyre shop.

RainExpert is a lower line than RainSport - it's intended for family cars rather than performance ones. I had RainExperts on my beloved Montego, bought before the Rainsports I put on my 9000. :-)

If you're willing to switch the size, look at pilot sport 4.
I'm using Michelin pilot sport 4 tires on my activa. They grip like there's no tomorrow and they give you a feeling of security in tight bends, but unfortunately they don't come in 205 60 15 size. I'm using 205 55 16, which is about the same diameter.
I'm not trapped with them. They are trapped with me.

Now I have finally used my stock of Pilot Sports and having had a bad experience with Continentals, I will be switching to 16 wheels in the summer. I will be keeping a good set of Pilots for shows and just for laughs, shame really.

Perhaps it's because when I fitted them I still had my 9000 on Uniroyal Rainsport3s, but I didn't think they felt as grippy as I'd like on a car I'd be driving hard.

Granted the XM's a bit bigger than an Activa and the Hydractive means it'll lean more but I'm aware Activa places a lot of demand on a tyre. I'm just not entirely sure from my experience that Energy Savers are the best call. I'd be keen to fit Rainsport3s if I could find them in the right size!

I ran Vredestein Sportrac 2 on mine for quite a few years. Excellent tyres, and not too expensive. The top-rated Dunlops I replaced them with weren't nearly as responsive.

I'd look at the Vredestein Sportrac 5 (latest version). I'll certainly be looking at Vredestein when I change the tyres on my RX-8. They're highly recommended in that community too.

I do drive my Activa like it's meant to be driven and I can't fault the Michelin Energy Savers on my car.

Sam, you were in it when it was on the Energy's.

Must say I do the same on occasions with XM 2.5, and have never found the ES's to feel insecure or unpredictable. They certainly provide a pliant ride - if you don't overinflate them - and work well with the Hydractive II.

What exactly did you find, Sam?
