Espace tailgate won't open!

Hi
The tailgate on my 1998 Espace opened this morning to allow the dogs IN ... but now I can't open it again.
I've looked on the inside of the door to see if there is an obvious way to remove the interior cladding with the door shut - but nothing seems obvious to me!
I'm not SURE if the door lock [solenoid??] is jammed, or if there is a linkage problem.
Any easy way to open the door?

I own a espace 1994 2.9 v6 and I had the same problem on the locking mechinism there is a plastic link that moves depending on the unlock or lock position it rides on a small shaft held with a circlip this gets gummed up and can lock the boot no matter wether it is unlocked or locked take it off and give it a good clean and put a little copper grease on to it, sadly the only way to open the door facia is to remove the top of the facia (it pulls of usually snapping a few of the little poppers) and then reach down and open your rear door hope some of this helps good luck
