2.0dci 6 speed auto. Vibrations and play in differential?

Unread post by Axa »

Since a few weeks a slight vibration when driving at speed.
I have checked the brake calipers and discs.
What I have found is that the part of the drive shaft that goes in to the differentia / gearbox (Jatco 6 speed auto 2008ym) have around 2mm of radial play.
Can this be the cause of the vibrations?
If so. Is there any good instructions on how to change the worn bearing?

You say radial play so your holding the shaft and turning it left /right , get hold of the shaft and wiggle it up and down if you have play there its the bearings gone , good luck with that one !

Even if that were the case the information wouldn't help, our new friend misunderstands the problem, radial play is the up and own movement.

So just to put this in layman's terms that a 2 year old can understand:
Radial play, or internal clearance, is the internal radial looseness in a bearing and is the measured value of the total radial movement of the outer ring with respect to the inner ring in a plane perpendicular to the bearing axis. Ball bearings are assembled to radial play values depending upon a desired range.
Got it? :rofl2:

2mm that's a hell of a lot of play. Surely there'll be puddles of oil under it.

Hi you all! :-) The car is still running fine! No vibrations at all now when I got well balanced tyres on ( A"friend of a friend mechanic" helped me with that the last time since I have access to a tyre shifting machine so I can do that myself. Well, the guy at the tyre shop had a good laugh when he did see the mess of old and new lead weight in the rims...)
I just changed about ~3/5 of the ATF for the 3rd time. Have not thought of wiggling the drive shaft..

With any vibrations tyre balance and general tyre condition should be the first thing to investigate.

I agree on that. And apparently also the second thing to investigate if the wheels have just been balanced..

I take it frekemail wont bother trying to help anyone else with the help he has just received understanding radial play. This forum will end up with about 20 or so people talking to each other just like a lot or other forums out there.

But hey who am i to say ive only been a member since 2006 with only 362 posts - wonder why?
