Renault modus wipers stop in vertical position

just bought a Renault modus 2004 1.4. The wiper blades work but when turned off they stop in the vertical position, pointing straight up either side of the windscreen. The garage i bought it from said this was how they are supposed to be but I've seen plenty since and none were pointing straight up like these they were all laid horizontal like every other cars are. Does anyone know what is wrong with these and how i can fix the problem. Thanks in advance.
