Exhaust maintenance - et al

Unread post by DrRog »

Hi guys

a "small" problem has arisen, all under control but worth noting.

I thought the exhaust was blowing a bit, getting under the Espace was tricky, I could see the pipe was loose, so I took it to my main dealer to fit

The collar between the exhaust and the downpipe was £15, but the fancy supports which have also "gone" are £87.43.

Worse still the "blow" could be because the rear engine mount had "gone" - £138.50.

Lesson learnt - If you think the engine is clonking as you select gear, get it looked at. The engine mount does not last forever, and it can impair the exhaust, which is Stainless and worth preserving.

I needed a spring too

At least the AC is now very cool - 10C air on my face with the outside 30C once the cabin has drawn down. 8-)
Cheers

Good news,
engine mount and exhaust bits fixed, car is now superbly quiet and smooth. 8-) 8-)

Definitely worth doing. Put the exhaust bits on your maintenance list :)

I knew Vel Sats were stainless exhaust. Espace as well then. Kind of figures as the engine options and gearboxes are all the same on both models.

Clonking when you put it in gear? Was it doing it when you came off the accelerator too?

Hi guys

its the 3.5 Nissan engine, so i think the same as the V-S. Concord is very apt

This car has a very good gearbox, it goes into neutral when you sit still in traffic and engages when you press the accelerator, it used to clonk then and when going from engine braking to acceleration. I particularly like the way the engine takes breath (eases off the throttle) during changes, which makes hard acceleration very smooth. Also the manual select is very good, it wont do anything stupid, which is easy with such a free-revving engine. It even knows when you want engine braking, it is the easiest auto i have known to stick to 30mph. 8-) 8-) 8-)

Unfortunately my pics won't load as they are too big (not sure why i set the camera to VGA  )

The engine mount concerned is a figure of 8 shaped ally casting with a rubber bush in each end. One end is much larger than the other and the cenre of the bush is mounted in a cruciform rubber mount, rather than a solid bush, I assume this makes it softer for better refinement. That cruciform rubber had parted completely leaving the bush to rattle in the large loop. It looked like it had been like it for some time.

Equally the broken spring was rusty on the break, it too looked as if it had been broken for the whole winter.

There are a few options to rectify that.
If using Windows, IIRC Irfanview will allow you to save the images as Jpg. or .png.

The Gimp will allow you to reduce the resolution and size of the image.

Probably simplest is to upload to Imgur and select the screen size appropriate for the forum - 15" screen is usually OK.

The board software will only allow a certain number of attachments.
Best to host offsite on a hosting site of your choice, there are loads of them and your ISP will probably have one linked to your account (Flickr! for BT)
On recommendation from Ben82 I have begun using Imgur and find it fills my requirements very nicely. (still have half a dozen others, can never find a damned thing when I need to :) )

Swiped the photos and edited them into your post :)

I used to use Flickr! quite a bit as I get pro status there but they have made it rather more complex than I am happy with.
Imgur is deadly simple and works much better than Photobucket now - that too has deteriorated quite a lot recently.
