1.6 litre means it is going to be running on the edge all the time to knock out 760hp so looks like reliability might be a big issue for next years F1 guys, a shame i thought we had seen the last of the engine break down days. it spoils a good GP when a win or points are lost because of a mechanical problem.

Hope the prove me wrong but history says there may be trouble ahead.

i vote that they put this unit in a new clio or megan and revive the old R5 GT turbo days with small car big power unit, who is with me ?

Have to disagree with your post, you can't beat a bit of unreliability to bring some interest back into F1, look,at Silverstone, was the best race we had for,ages with the exploding tyre issue.
As fo Turbo units in road cars, have you looked at what's going on lately, most manufacturers have Turbo engines, and they are all going his way, Remaults new Clio sport is a turbo. Ford with the 1.0 Ecoboost producing 175 bhp in some variants.

I disagree. The Hondas, Renaults and TAGs of the mid-80s were putting out over 800bhp reliably from 1.5 litre V6s in 1987 with 4 bar boost. Given that technology and production techniques have advanced a lot since then, I see 760bhp as no problem at all. They were getting 1500bhp the year before on qually boost, though not as reliably.

Dont mind being wrong on the reliability and hope you guys are right and there wont be any engine issues. As for it adding to the race personal opinion but i dont like races being decided by that kind of reliability issues, i doint mind if a team are pushing close to the edge and some times it pays off and other times they fail its kind of all or bust, that i dont mind too much but when its just normal running and the race is effected it spoils the race for me, as i said personal opinion only i know some guys like it mixed up by "false" results just not for me. i do look forward to the almost clean slate that the new regs bring with them and hope that the back of the pack teams can catch up a little.
As for the "small car big power unit" i would like to see more like http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/reviews/r ... o/v6-2001/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
big power unit in a little motor not a 1.0 turbo more a 3.0 turbo
i dont like 'eco' especialy in F1 cant imagine the old timers of the sport rocking out to the track in a car with a smaller engine than the family run about?

Prost and Senna both won 2 of their 3 titles with 1500cc turbo engines, Nelson Piquet won all of his with a 1500cc turbo motor.

The turbo engines of the 1980s were something else. 1300+ bhp in qualifying trim, 900+ from the good ones in the race. They make todays 2.4 litre V8s and pre-2007 3.0 V8 motors look like pussycats. The last 3.5 engines of 2004 were knocking on the door of 1000bhp again but even so.. mild and gentle compared to the nutty turbo motors of the 80s.

There's a youtube vid of one of the 80s Lotus Renaults at Adelaide. Wheelspin. In 6th gear. In the dry. Utterly loopy. I'll find it when I can get to a PC.

I do indeed James. It's crackers. No semi-auto gearboxes, traction control or anything to help the driver along at all.

That said, I think modern day drivers do a harder job. Even with less power they're going a lot faster due to other advances. Sky or BBC did a comparison between Senna and Hamilton at Monaco, using Senna's famous 1988 pole lap. He was nowhere compared to Hamilton. Yes. Hamilton has a more modern car... but, he's still got to have the skill to drive it that fast.

They could probably get 2.5k hp out of that engine if they were allowed. I don't see 750 as a problem, road cars run with that these days!
