Headlights

Unread post by jwalshe »

Hello!

Are the Series 2 single optic headlamps supposed to glow when switched to sidelights?

Mine (1988 TRS) doesn't do it (only the sidelights come on). I'm sure the headlights themselves are supposed to give off a low-level glow?

No it's only sidelights that come on.

Some models may have been fitted with the Dim-Dip system, long gone now. IIRC my Renault 11 had it.
The headlights would come on at low power together with the sidelights as for a while it was illegal to drive with just sidelights, may still be for all I know. No-one seems to care though.

Ah, okay! I've seen quite a few with their headlights glowing in the past. So what does that cylindrical shaped thing attached on the offside headlamp do? Always thought that had something to do with it.

That will be the Dim-dip resistor that has probably gone open circuit.
If you want them to glow you could probably replace it.

Something like this (this is a Rover/MG unit).

These type of resistors are available from Maplins etc. This is 72 Ohm one.

Thanks Steve! I quite like the somewhat sinister glow I've seen on some CXs. I replaced the resistor with another one from a CX but I'm guessing it's not working or something isn't connected properly...

Should be easy to test with a multimeter.
Dealer may have them. There are some second-hand ones on eBay but they look pretty crusty :(

Yeah - made the mistake of buying a really crusty one off EBay! Should have asked if it was actually working...
Doh!

Whereabouts James?

As you are standing in front on the car (bonnet up) and looking down to the offside head lamp there should be a cylindrical tube/thing with a few wires coming off of it going to a multiplug - it should be affixed to the metal to the right of the light by a square push in clip.

If we're talking about the same thing I believe that is the outside temperature sensor?

I'll try and find a pic at some point. I'm probably barking up the wrong tree...

That's it!!! That's not an outside air sensor surely?

That looks very much like what they were selling as the dim dip resistor.

I'm still unsure - I'm sure someone will come along and give us the correct answer! :?

I bet Neil/CGAT will know?

Hi, definitely dim-dip resistor, the outside air temp sensor is a small black unit with 2 wires usually fitted to the edge of the front bumper. (James - I don`t think your CX has an outside temp display in it)

Nope - I thought it'd be odd to have a sensor but no temp display inside! All I have is a clock. And very little else, being a TRS with basic spec interior!

So question is.... how do I get the thing working. Something for a Sunday afternoon, I think. Will report back soon...
