Water leaking into interior?

Unread post by jwalshe »

Hello all,

Has anyone had experience of this? Had the carpets up to dry them out so that's fine but... it seems the water is still getting in, with a small puddle in the rear compartment and a trail of water from behind the backrest. Boot inspection reveals water at the bottom of the back wall of the boot but nowhere else.

Where on earth could it be coming from?!? (Aside from the sky...)

Top of rear wheel arches tend to rot nicely, could be one of them also holes appear in boot above rear bumper hangers.

Cheers but the car doesn't have any rot - it's just been restored. :-)

I'm targeting the rear-most windows today with some extra sealant. It hasn't been driven in the rain and so it's definitely a leak from above, rather than below.

I'll report back soon!

She's running beautifully aside from that - just wonderful!

Top of the rear window on mine leaked. The sealant was no longer stuck to the glass.
After removing the shiny exterior trim, I cleaned/dried the area with a hot air gun & filled the gap with Sikkaflex - sorted

Hi John,

Thanks for this - funnily enough, I took that very trim off yesterday and sealed the window surrounds with sealer. It hasn't rained here properly yet but when it does, I'll be out there sat on a stool with a brolly watching! :-)

Really hoping it has done the job as I'm definitely not putting the carpets or seats back in the car until I'm sure. Took me a week to dry the rear carpets out (the car was parked facing downhill so all the water leaking into the boot had run downwards and into the passenger compartment!).

All part of the joy of running a car that hasn't been used since 2006. She's running beautifully though - feels so good to be a CX driver again!

Bit of an update... dodgy door seals were the cause of rainwater leaking into the rear footwells - now fixed. But although I've re-sealed the rear windows, a small puddle of water still appears in the rear offside area of the boot. Really weird! The investigation goes on.... :-)

Having trouble with my Prestige now it's outside, no water puddles I can find and door seals seem OK all windows misting up inside with rear screen and side ones being the worse.
Do you think sealing the windows helped in any way?

Evidently the boot leak on mine was caused by a slightly ill-fitting boot seal (now fixed).

As for the misting up, I was told to check the seal between the windows and the frame. Involves taking all the trim off the side windows and the rear window and prodding your finger all the way around the edges of the window to check for moisture where the glass is glued. Apparently quite common and involves taking the glass out and refitting.

Fortunately I didn't have to go through that on my Prestige but I remember my first CX having this problem.

When I took the rear glass out of mine the other week, the glass at the bottom had come unstuck from the sealent along quite along stretch.

Bet that's what it is: as rust starting up along sill bottom of rear side windows, going back into garage next week may risk removing windows then.

Hi All,
Got trouble with the usual water leak into the interior, the front pax carpet was saturated and the glove box had about an inch of water in it!! I got the sealing gun out and went along the usual suspect places ( ie the top rear of the front wings) After a couple of weeks and a few heavy showers all seemed well , no water in glove box and carpet only damp. However then developed hyd leak in engine bay area and MOT due but due to weather could not work on it.
With better weather i decided to have a look at it .on removing the spare wheel i found it to be half full of water!! then on starting the engine i had a strong elec type burning smell and smoke poured out of the air intake tower(the internal fan switch had been left on) So the only thought i have is that rain water must be getting in at the bottom of the wind screen
the pax carpet is also soaking wet again i have had to cut it in front of the seat and remove it to dry it.
Question is has anyone else had this problem and what has burnt out ? (fan no longer works) is it the fan motor?
I think i am going to have to remove the windscreen to check for leaks. Any advice very welcome

Kind Regards
Janston

Check behind the LHM reservoir, when doing work on mine I found that area had rotted, allowing the passenger carpet to get drenched but also the blower transistor.
