Laguna 2.2 DCI Starting Problem

Unread post by Badge 714 »

Good morning all.

I have a 54 plate Laguna 2.2 DCI and it has stopped starting! I can bump start it, and the battery is fully charged (6 month old Bosch Silver brand). When I put the card in the reader I get the usual click and the lights on the dash light up as usual. When I press the start button the glow plug light comes on and extinguishes as usual then a very faint click (relay energising?) then nothing and then the key card gets released. STOP and brake lights are illuminated. I have tested for loose connections on the battery posts and also on the starter itself.

Can anyone suggest a way of testing the starter motor in situ? Can I just short the solenoid out or will this cause more problems? Is there a fuse to the starter motor or is it the inline protector on the battery lead? How can I tell if it is the relay and which one is it?

Sorry for all the questions. Thanks for any help. Second car down in 48 hours. :-(

Not sure your issue is a starter problem, cant see why this would cause the ignition to turn off.
Reckon you need someone with a clip diagnostic tool.

Could be the card reader? I don't know if you can hot wire the starter on the engine but you could take it off for testing.
Could be lots of things before the starter. Don't bump start the car if you have a CAT. Have you tried the other card?

What is the little red immobiliser light doing throughout all of this?

Yes, both cards. I was wondering if it was a synchronisation issue with the card and immobiliser but it does it with both cards. If kit was the immobiliser it wouldn't bump start would it? Take your point about bump starting and the CAT well reminded. Only did the once to try and eliminate the immobiliser.

Its on when the card is first inserted and the rest of the dash lights come on then it goes out, press start, nothing, then 5 or so seconds later the STOP, the battery and the hand brake warning lights come. Take the card out and the immobiliser light starts blinking.

Ah, you can rule out a key card, reader and immobiliser issue then as that's what the light should do.

My Vel Satis did this once and it was actually down to the battery. It wouldn't even jump start as the battery was that knackered, despite being absolutely fine up to that point. I would definitely try another one if you have access to one without paying for it.

I'll try another battery and also take the one that's in it, out and charge it aswell. See If I get anywhere with that before pulling the starter out.

Well the battery has been on charge for 24hrs. Its been tested at the local auto spares shop with a Gunson battery tester which said it was Good as rated at EN750.

Trying to get the starter out now but the bottom turbo to IC pipe seems to stick after travelling a couple of cms. Does anyone know what sort of pipe comes out of the bottom of the turbo, is there some sort of flange on it? Is it feasible to get the starter out without removing the turbo > IC pipe as per Haynes manual?

Thanks for any help.

The starter is out and tested by the local Auto-Tech shop. It seems OK without load on it. What else is there between the card reader and the starter? Are there any relays or fuses in the starting circuit? I'm baffled.

Check the fuse marked "COUPE CONSO", the one marked "ALIM UCH" and the one marked "MEMO INJECT". Had a baffling starting problem with a Scénic the other day, and these were the culprits.

Cheers for that, I'll give that a try tomorrow when I've got the starter back in :-( Where are they located? In the engine bay fuse box or in the cabin fuse box? I know you said a Scenic but I imagine they're probable in the same box.

You must be well frustrated by now!

They were all in the cabin fuse box of the Scenic, but seeing as the Laguna has a much more sophisticated system, some of them could be in the bonnet one.

Well it's all back together, copper grease on all the terminals, and some lithium grease on the starter shaft and cog. And it started first time :? I suspect that the positive lead from the battery to the fuse box in the engine bay may have become slightly corroded which would mean the solenoid didn't activate. Still all done. I found a PDF detailing fuse and relay location and use on the internet. I can't credit the original source because I can't remember it sorry. Can anyone suggest a way of uploading it. The forum doesn't allow PDF extensions or TXT.

Now just need to work out why the drivers door window only drops and rises about an inch at a time.
