Odd Sphere Problem

Unread post by CitroJim »

I thought I'd seen most of the googlies that a hydraulic Citroen could throw but today I had a new one...

I replaced the rear center (hydractive) sphere on Rattiva this morning in my usual way, reused the seal, hand-tight and so on. The damm thing leaked

Replaced the seal. Still leaked although marginally less perhaps.

I wondered for a moment if I'd damaged the sphere block in using a large percussive instrument and a large punch to remove the old sphere.

But no, close inspection of the replacement sphere, an old accumulator that had lost a bit of puff, I found this:

That's paint on the sealing surface :o When they painted it there was a bit of overspray. Cleaned it up and removed a rime of corrosion on the sphere block face and all is now good...

Odd it never leaked in service as an accumulator...

New one on me too Jim. Oviously caused by 'a combination of factors' :?

Leaks occur if you put the seal on upside down Jim, looks like it was third time lucky for when the leak stopped.

Is this a joke?

Hard to tell via words but I'm sure it is! Although if someone told me the seals aren't square and taper to one edge I wouldn't be surprised.

Dom
i think Richard means if re/useing a seal to fit it the same way round as it came out,
if you look at a used seal you can normaly see which side has been towards the ram, as it will have indentations from the slight alloy surface corosion
they arent realy directional as such,

Yes it's a wind up

I was thinking of saying that the green print on the side of the seal has to point towards the kerb dependant upon whether the car is LHD or RHD.
