Unread post by gazzas c5 »

Hi folks,my scenic engine blew up yesterday as turbo went and low oil pressure came on the display dash, eventually the car came to a halt wouldnt drive anymore and then almighty BANG!!! inside of the car filled up with smoke and felt hot so i got out the car and phoned firebrigade and they were on the scene within 2 mins!!! they managed to put the engine fire out and saved the car basically, what do you think has happened?while the firemen were hosing it down the coolant system burst and went all over the road, insurance is picking it up on monday but i can buy the car back as its mega mint, just prob need to source an engine i think and hope so,cheers its a 53 reg 1.9 Dci Dynamique

That doesnt sound at all like a 1.9DCi engined Renault!

Sorry to hear your car ended in such an unfortunate way, that could have been very dangerous.

To be honest if I was you i would be hoping the insurance write off the car and leave it at that.

The 1.9 is a known bad engine and ive never heard anyone recommend one. Turbos fail all of the time, EGR problems then bearing problems with the engine etc etc. Really horrid unit.

Ive said time and again on here how poor they are, if you look on Renault forums they will and do say the same thing. Its well documented on here and elsewhere on the internet.

This is the worst case ive heard of though, with the thing actually bursting into flames. It might have done you a favour :(

Did you pull over as soon as the light came on?

I have a deep hatred of the 1.9DCi engine, so many Renaults appeal to me, but as i like diesels id have to have this engine, and knowing how bad it is id never buy one, so I could only buy the petrol versions.

Best sticking with your C5s ...

That is scary, i know this engine has major issues, but it going bang in such a big way is not acceptable. Obviously I dont know its mileage or service record etc, but that doesnt make much difference, as its not the first time a 1.9 has blew up. Ive seen reports of them failing at as low as 30K miles.

Really, if the fire and engine blowing up has not put you off, having a browse on the Renault forums should.

Id let it go for scrap, not something id like to do with a car of mine but when its expired in such a way and since there is an easy way out from owning such a problematic engine id go for it.

If you do buy it back, good luck sourcing a good engine! It'll be difficult.

(mainly because they didn't make one!)

Someone i know had a 1.9 Megane, the engine developed a bad knocking noise. It was towed to a garage stripped and one of the bearings had melted. A replacement engine was sourced, when that was fitted it also had a bad knock, it was stripped and found with the same problem. Thats just one account, there are many more on the net.

Such a shame, as when the 1.9DCi works, it drives and performs well.

We sold our 53reg ScenicII 1.9DCi just as its warranty expired, as such failings were just getting more well known. The gearbox was starting to crunch on 2nd (another issue on them, Renault wouldn't replace ours) and the clutch was droning - at 22K miles. Awful things. Great cars the ScenicIIs though, i like them, just need to be a petrol or 1.5DCi.

The main cause for the turbo failure is normally the turbo getting starved of oil and overheating, it can then disintegrate and ruin the engine.

hi, just want to add in defence of the f9q 1.9 engine that i have seen many of these engines with nearly 200000 miles on them and still going ! also have seen these engines sceaming when they have been incorrectly filled with oil and the turbo sucks it in causing it to way over rev and no way of stopping it untill yhe oil is burnt off and still survive ! they arnt all that bad and i have never seen one catch fire ! you have been very unlucky , regards antz
