2001 Laguna 2 Issues

Hi guys,
I have a laguna 2, Y reg, 2001, its the 1.8 version, expression I think it is. The one without all the goodies.

Anyway, when I bought the car it had a aftermarket button sitting in the little groove under the steering wheel with 2 wires connected which go directly to the starter motor, this is because the start button doesn't work.

Now, if you get in the car and put the card in, the start button only lights up if you push the clutch, when you press the button there is a big click and all the dash board goes off as if you are starting the car, then a few seconds later it all comes back on again as if you have just put the card in.

The car starts perfectly with the extra button and the original button stops the car as it should, it just doesn't start it.

Now, I also have no reversing lights, I know it has been said that it could be the reverse sensor but I am wondering, as the car lights up the button when the clutch is pressed, weather in gear or not, could it be anything else?

I'm at the end of my teather with this car at the minute, the clutch decided to stop working 20 miles from home so I had to replace the master cylinder as well as a couple of suspension springs and suspension arms etc, I just want my car to work!

On top of all this, the temperature gauge hardly moves and the heater decides weather it wants to get warm or not when driving, usually it will get warm-ish but it takes a good 10 to 15 minutes to get there.

Can anyone help me with any of these problems, I want my car to work. I only bought it as I had to get rid of my old car as we have a baby on the way, due in march so I have a couple of months left to get the car working properly.

Another thing while I'm thinking about it, only the drivers window works. All windows except the passenger front did work but I tried to change the switch and when I connected the new switch to the drivers door and pressed the switch for the back window, something went POP and now only the drivers window works so I put the old switch back on and its still the same. The fuses just inside the drivers door on the dash for the windows are all fine, another annoying problem.

I really hope someone can help me with these problems, I can't wait to get my car working as it should.

I can't make too much comment on the Laguna as I've never owned nor' wanted a Renault. I only got a Citroen cos' it was cheaper than 400 Marlboro!

The temperature issue is more than likely the thermostat stuck on cool. A new one is probably less than a tenner and take about an hour to change...

The reversing lights not working could be that the switch is jammed on... So therefore the engine start button isn't working. I don't really know. However... I can't see why it wouldn't work.

Try changing the switch on the gearbox for a known good one from the breakers.

I'm not sure why someone would go to the trouble of installing a switch on an already complex motor, instead of just getting to the bottom of the fault!
