renault 1.5dci lumpy cold start help please

Unread post by dennis9112 »

Hi, i have a clio 1.5dci 2004 with full service history 980000 on the clock and just had new glow plugs and a egr, in the past i have had a few concerns when at low revs (first gear) i gett a loud knocking noise which disapears at mid range (sounds like pinking on a petrol car only louder) now this only happens every now and then .Today for the first time since i have owned the car it was really lumpy when i started from cold and i had to rev the engine to stop it from rocking, this as never happened before ,it did go once i had got to work and it does not do it when warm,i have noticed that it seems to be a bit hesitant at times but once on the motorway the car is smooth and accelerates fine , i still get the knocking noise every now and then ,some times it seems ok then it comes back, always seems to be in first gear. I have put some redx in today hoping that it may be a fuel fault . fuel filter as been on since 72,000 miles . Any help would be appreciated . Thanks

Definitely get a new fuel filter fitted. The noise sounds like diesel knock which afaik is similar to pinking. You might find your injectors want a clean to restore the spray pattern. It might pay to try some diesel cleaner in the fuel which you can get from your local factor. I always thought Redex was more suitable for petrol but may be wrong. Have a look in Yellow Pages for a local diesel engineer, they're normally very good and cheaper than a dealer. I've just bought a Scenic with the 1.5 so will be interested to see what this is.
