PM mail system ok?

I have three PM's sitting in my outbox (earliest one sent on 12th Oct). Either they've not been picked up yet or the system's missed them I assume?

Outbox is where they reside before they've been read, right? So yes, either they haven't been picked up by the two recipients or?

Hi Wainy..

I found the forum mail server had died overnight. I restarted it this morning and it seems happy now.

The message you saw was a complicated way of saying the forum could not see an SMTP mail server to despatch email to.

Let me know if it is now working OK for you...

Well, I've just logged back in to the forum and it told me there was a PM waiting. This was a reply to the one I tried to send earlier, so it did actually get through! However, when I replied I got the same error message as before.

So, no change I think.

Problem found

The new forum mail server is a bit cleverer than the old one..

If the forum sends an email to an invalid address the mail server returns a "bounce" result code to the forum and it seems phpBB2 does not quite know how to handle it and takes the default route of doing an electronic shrug, sulking and issuing a debug message that means very little unless you dive into the code.

Upshot is, if you try to PM someone and the Debug message comes up, the problem is that the recipient has an invalid email address in their profile.

Please PM me of all such occurrences of this and I will resolve the issue. I cannot obviously email the recipient but I can restore normality to the PM service by substituting a good test email address and then PM'ing as normal.

One member with this problem has already been resolved.
