Laguna 2.2DT Overheating and Heater Problem

Unread post by gin9e »

Have a 1997 Laguna 2.2d estate, that has started to overheat on long slow climbs, firstly with a full load but last night with 1 passenger and a small empty trailer - Any ideas?

Seems to be worse when it's sunny!

Also Fan Blower in the car works intermittantly and only seems to be corrected by slamming the glovebox closed!! I am sure that this is not how it was designed

Water under drivers feet

Unread post by gin9e »

The carpet in the Drivers footwell is wet, I assumed that this could be due to the leak coming from the base of the roof aerial when its been raining but other posts seem to suggest this footwell water is a common thing, but what does it mean?

As you can tell, I have absolutely no idea about the workings of a car, but absolutely no money to pay someone else to have a look for me! Any advice would be appreciated.

Generally indicates a leaking heater matrix, usually confirmed by a smell of coolant that some describe as curry-like.
Loss of coolant may be accompanied by air in the system which would go some way to explaining the overheating.
Corrosion blocking the heater matrix and reducing it's effective volume would add to this.

Thank's for the advice.

Any idea how tricky and expensive this would be to sort out?

I am living in France and everything seems to be very expensive here - is there any point in gettng a part from a breaker?

It is a DIY job and there are several threads devoted to it but although not really difficult you can expect to spend a day to a day and a half doing it as the whole dash needs to come out on most cars.
The matrix is not an expensive part and I would personally not consider one from a scrap yard as you have no way of knowing it's internal condition, plus all the bother of removing it, although that would help in learning what is needed as far as dismantling and reassembling is concerned.

It is a fairly expensive job in a garage due to the amount of time needed to complete it.
