My friend was re fused her driving test the other day in her 2004 Clio when the tester asked for a Renault certificate to say it had its bonnet catch re call carried out.
Anybody else heard of this??

I've not heard of the Renault tale but when I was in a test centre a few weeks ago I saw a similar note relating to Peugeot 206's and like your tale if no certificate is produced then no test.
I don't suppose that they would so helpful as to supply a list of relevant car's/faults that prevent a test taking place when you book the test, now I'd have thought that would be common sense, but the DSA are a law unto themselves.
What happened to your friends test fee, will it be refunded?

Health and safety gone mad by the sounds of it
You've got more chance of being struck by a meteor during the test than the bonnet opening by itself. When you take it for it's "recall", chances are they'll just squirt some WD40 on it.

The Clio has a well known and documented problem with the bonnet catch, and the bonnet opening when driving. They recalled a lot (like hundreds of thousands) to have the catches replaced. Bit off if this info is not given out at the time of booking - but the examiner's decision is final. So to speak

Personally, I think this has been hyped out of all proportion, which is typical of a consumer programme like Watchdog. The Clio car club I'm a member of has 36,000 members. Not once do I recall seeing a "my bonnet opened by itself" thread. Those that have been in for the "recall" report that all they do is squirt some WD40 on the catch.

There's no recall on any Clio model for bonnet catch issues on the VOSA website...
Or am I missing something?
Well if you don't belive me look at this: http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/Le ... /DG_173040
And if you have had the catch checked or done at Renault they will print you a certificate free of charge. I know this because I had mine catch done on Monday

Judging by the link you posted eric, a current MOT is apparently sufficient evidence that the bonnet has been looked at. The original poster's friend wouldn't have needed a cert to say an apprentice had sprayed WD40 on her bonnet catch if she had her MOT on her.
Anyway, that DSA website is wrong in saying that a recall had taken place on 12 October 2007. If you can find a Clio bonnet recall on the VOSA website I'll eat my hat... 8)
