Laguna 2 1.816V Noisy engine when hot on idle?

Unread post by nesssalmon »

Hi I have a Y reg Laguna 2 estate 1.8 16V dynamique.

When she starts for cold she purrs beautifully. Then when running temperature is reached on idle, there is a tapping/knocking form the engine. When you tap the accelerator the noisy almost disappears.

Could this be a cam noise? or hydraulic lifters?

She is running fine with no apparent loss of power and no smoke from the rear.

Any Ideas
Many Thanks

Long shot :

Many engines have a rattling noise which appears to be the normal ticking from the electromagnetic coil valves in the jets.
Also the purge electro valve venting the charcoal canister (which seeps up fuel fumes) can make a rather loud ticking noise.

Finally if you are a victim of the "the dearer the better" low viscosity super hyper mega fully synthetic engine oils, the engine will noticeably have more hot idle ticking noise.
Simply because of the thinner oil lubing film covering the moving parts, allowing for a bit too high clearance.

You should go for the recommanded oil type in your owners handbook.
The oil type is denoted by the viscosity index, i.e. 10W40 as an example.
The quality (durability) of the oil is denoted by the API index, which simply should have the higehset alphabetic notation to be the best, being mineral or synthetic.

Many Thanks for your reply.

I will check the oil first, I nevr really liked sythetic oils. (after they made my volvo leak) and then look at the 2 valves you mentioned.

Although if these are 'normal' then I guess not much can be done.

Cheers
