Hi Guys and Gals,
I seem to have a problem with a petrol Clio (05 Reg - I assume that is 2005 - lol). It sometimes has difficulty starting in the REALLY (brrrrr) weather and the main dealer replaced a coil a few months ago. The problem has started again and the dealer says it needs yet another coil. What I would like to know is; how many coils does a clio have and, in addition, to save money can you buy them from your local motor shop and are they easy to fit as I get the feeling I'm being ripped off? The main dealer said it was a common problem and Renault had recently modified them so why should I have to pay for them fitting a faulty bit as original equipment?
All help gratefully received
Love, Michelle XXX

hello Michelle,
I would concur with that.. I think 'pencil coils' should only be 20-30 £ each.. there should be four though.. I would say fitting is little more difficult than changing spark plugs, i.e. pretty easy
Whether you can get them changed as a 'recall' is a doubtful matter, but the fact that the new ones may be better may mean that car shops may not stock them yet ? worth getting a few quotes from indpendants, for a single coil swap only, see what they come up with ?
I dont have direct knowledge of the car/engine though

As stated there are 4, you can usually get a brand new set for about £40 off ebay, just make sure they are not the "grey top" sagem ones, as they are the ones that fail.
Fitting is even easier than spark plugs, just remove the engine cover (if present), then one 10mm bolt (per coil) and they lift off, then just unplug from the loom.
They are a common failure so it's worth phoning Renault UK Customer Services.
