Megane Scenic - Revving out of control! 'SORTED'

Hi everyone.. first time on the Renault Forum.. please be kind.

New addition to vehicle family. 1998 1.6 Megane Scenic. Bought last week everything fine till yesterday when all of a sudden the revs increased to max while waiting at a junction! Turned off engine and restarted fine, this happened a few times till I managed to get it home. Anyway.. throttle cable in very poor state so I changed it and everything seemed fine.. till the wife drove it today! Local garage called out by wife, they say that at some point the head gasket has been replaced and something about a vacuum leak into the radiator !!! I know Iknow but the wife swears that is what he said, anyway they want £100 to fix.. any clues before I go to the garage to collect it back?????
